Pte. Thomas Ryan 1st Btn. York and Lancaster Regiment

Thomas Ryan served with the 1st Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment in WW2. He was captured in Norway and arrived at Stalag XXA on 28th of May 1940 until 22nd of September 1940. He transferred to Bau-und-Arbeits Battalion 40 on 26th of January 1942 and later was transferred to Bau-Und-Arbeits Battalion 20 on 10th of March 1943. Thomas was again moved on to Stalag 344 on 20th of November 1944.

Tommy was shot while in Norway and still had the bullet in him when he arrived back home after weeks of being marched around by the Germans in bitterly cold weather. The imprisonment affected his mental health for many years. He had a loving family awaiting his return.

Kathie Sedgley

Pte. Ronald Arthur Askew 8th Btn. Sherwood Foresters   (d.April 1940)

Ronald Askew is buried at a war grave at Lillehammer Northern Civil Cemetery in Norway. In April 1940 he was part of the 8th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters that had landed in Norway as part of a disastrous attempt to assist the Norwegian Army against the Germans. The ship carrying the Battalion's vehicles and heavy equipment was sunk and those not killed were forced to flee through mountains in deep snow.

Pte. Leslie Kershaw York and Lancaster Regiment

My father, Leslie Kershaw, was captured in Norway after crossing from Scapa Flo. He was a POW in Stalag XXB. One day they were all called out and the Germans came round with a board asking what their occupation was. Another prisoner nudged dad and said tell them you grow potatoes. A few days later dad was called out to the gate and sent to a farm to work. I would love to find out more of this story.

He worked mainly on farms and became friendly with the Polish family he worked with. He used to escape through a hole in the fence to steal veg and any other food he could boil up for his hut mates. He was hit on the side of the head by a guard for not bringing the hut to attention and had a cauliflower ear for the rest of his life.
