Sgt. Reginald James White .     Royal Air Force 51 Squadron   from Wishford, Wiltshire

(d.16th Jan 1942)

I know very little of my Uncle Sgt. Reginald White, he was my mother's elder brother, he served with the RAF in 51 Squadron and died at the age of 19 when his Whitley bomber was shot down. He was a rear gunner.

Members of my family have visited his grave at Rottevale in Holland. Recently his younger step brother visited, and was very surprised at the welcome and hospitality shown by the villagers, who still hold an annual service for the war graves in their local parish church. All the facts I know are below, and were gathered from this site, where there are details of the two other brave young men who lost their lives that night. The bravery of young men such as my Uncle are an inspiration to me.

He is buried in the cemetery of the Protestant Church in Rottevalle along with two of his fellow crewmen who also lost theirs lives that night However there is a mystery in that the graves state that they were killed on 23rd October 1942, yet records show that it was 15th January 1942 at 1758 they took off from RAF Dishforth. Their aircraft was a Whitley, number Z9424 of No. 51 Squadron RAF. There are rumours that the crew were injured, and locals hid them, but unfortunately they died of their injuries and were buried much later in secret.

His last mission was a bombing raid at the port of Emden. The aircraft was shot down over the Netherlands by the German night-fighter Unteroffizier Kurt Zipperlein, 4./NJG1 and crashed down at 0330 in Rottevalle. Three of the six crew members died in the crash, they are buried here. The other three crew members were taken prisoner of war by the Germans. The graves are for:

  • Flt. Sgt. (Air Ob.) Sydney Clarence Camp, R/71752, RCAF, age 23
  • Sgt. (Pilot) Eric John Richards, 1162205, RAF, age unknown
  • Sgt. (Air Gnr.) Reginald James White, 624058, RAF, age 19 (my uncle)
This small but wonderful information which brings me closer to a lost relative was gathered from http://en.tracesofwar.com/article/20869/Commonwealth-War-Graves-Rottevalle.htm

Sergeant Thomas White .     RAF 626 Squadron (d.1st July 1944)

Thomas White was in 626 Squadron of the Royal Air Force, service no 925205 and flew the Lancaster bomber for Bomber Command. He was a Sergeant (Flt. Engineer). On the 30 June/1 July 1944 (quote from RAF) "118 Lancasters of No: 1 Group attacked railway yards at the small town of Vierzon, south of Orleans and bombed with great accuracy, a success for No: 1 Group's own marking flight. 11 Lancasters were lost, nearly 12% of the force". Tom was shot down over France and killed on 1 July 1944. He is commemorated at Theillay Communal Cemetery, Loire et Cher, France.

He had covered a certain amount of flights but due to the shortage of pilots was given extra flights to do and it was on this final flight that he got shot down and killed.

Walter William "Knocker" White .     Royal Navy   from Ryde, Isle of White

My grandfather Walter William White was in the Navy, and was on the HMS Manchester when it was torpedoed in 1942. He swam to the shore and was imprisoned, I guess in Tunisia having read some of the other accounts.

I was just a few months old when he died in 1970 and so never got to know him. My uncle tells me that he (Walter) told him about what happened to Norman Greaves, so it was very poignant to read that account on the website.

He was captured at Abbeville, after Dunkirk. He was marched with others, through various countries and ended up at Stalag XXa. Bill remained a POW until his release in 1945. He survived and returned to Shoreham by Sea in Sussex to his wife, Nell, and children, Gordon, Terry, and Renee. He lived until old age and died in 1977. He was a member of the Dunkirk Veterans Assn in Brighton. His pal was Edward Goldring.

William James White .     British Army Royal Signals

Jim White served with the Royal Signals.

S/Sgt. William Ernest "Chalky" White .     British Army Royal Army Ordnance Corps

My father, William White, born 18th of September 1918, died in 1998. Forced to sign up when he was a year under age by his mother's "boyfriend", he spent his whole life in the RAOC, until his retirement at the age of 54. (They would never accept his claim that he was not born in 1917!)

He served in Africa with Montgomery during WW2 and was part of the D-day landing force in 1944. As they advanced he met a lady in a bar in Brussels. This turned out to be the Aunt of my mother. They married in December 1946.

I sit here, with his medals in view, proud of the man who was my father. My mother and sister have since passed away but he will always be the one I miss.

CPO.ERA. Andrew Whitecross .     Royal Navy HMS Nelson   from Dundee

My Father, Andrew Whitecross was a Chief Petty Officer, Engine Room Articifer on HMS Nelson during WW2. He had his appendix removed on VJ Day, I think in Bombay, and was demobbed there. He was proud of his service and "The Nellie". Sadly passed away January 2008, aged 86. "A Gentle Man"

Pte. Thomas Whitecross .     British Army 12th Battalion, B Squadron Royal Tank Regiment   from Hartlepool

I only know about my Uncle Tommy Whitecross through talking to my mum after finding his photograph in my late grandma's photo album. Little is known about him as he was a very private person who talked very discretely as regards the actions he was involved with during the war. What we do know is that he was wounded in Italy at some time during 1944 which was reported in the local newspaper The Hartlepool Mail at the time.

Charles Lewis Whited .     U.S.Navy   from Charleston, West Virginia, USA

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
