S/Sgt. William Ernest "Chalky" White
British Army Royal Army Ordnance Corps
My father, William White, born 18th of September 1918, died in 1998. Forced to sign up when he was a year under age by his mother's "boyfriend", he spent his whole life in the RAOC, until his retirement at the age of 54. (They would never accept his claim that he was not born in 1917!)
He served in Africa with Montgomery during WW2 and was part of the D-day landing force in 1944. As they advanced he met a lady in a bar in Brussels. This turned out to be the Aunt of my mother. They married in December 1946.
I sit here, with his medals in view, proud of the man who was my father. My mother and sister have since passed away but he will always be the one I miss.
