Sgmn. Alan "Deeker" Whitaker .     British Army 2 Air Formation Signals   from Leeds

My father, Alan Whitaker, served, in as far as I can make out, 2 Air Formation Signals. He served in Northern Ireland in 1939 and deployed to France and was left behind after Dunkirk.

He was reported missing possibly killed in action. My aunt told me that Alan was missing for some time and my grandparents had accepted he had been killed. My aunt and her friend were on a open topped tram in North Lane, Headingley, Leeds. My aunt's friend said to her "I'm sure I just saw your Alan in the street". She replied "that can't be right as he is dead". It was my father and he had also seen my aunt so ran to meet her at the next stop. My aunt had to go and tell my grandparents that Alan was back so they would not be shocked at him turning up.

My father went on to serve in North Africa, Italy and France and Germany. His decorations are the 39-45 Star, N Africa, Italy and France and Germany Star, The War and Defence medals and the Militia Efficient Service Medal. He passed away in 1967.

My father Sydney Whitcombe did not talk much about his experiences of his service in the RAF. He was a navigator for the 195 Squadron and received the DFC for his bravery.

Interestingly enough he was at first a conscientious objector when war broke out, later joining the RAF having spent most of the initial years dragging bodies from bombed buildings in London. I have a photograph of him and some of his crew with their names but would love to find out more about anyone connected to the 195 squadron and any other photographs.

Sgt. Albert "Knocker" White .     British Army   from Ilkeston, Derbyshire

My Grandad Albert White didn't want to talk about the war and after his death we found his medals and war memorabilia hidden in his bedroom. Such a shame he never shared or showed his war stories and memorabilia with us. Such a humble man, we want to recognise his life.. We loved him dearly.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
