Pte. Edward "Chalky" White .     British Army Dorsetshire Regiment   from Kilburn

My father, Edward White joined the Dorsetshire Regiment in 1936. He went to India in September 1937 and served there until June 1939. He was then posted to Malta in June 1939 and was there until November 1943. In that time he met my mother. They were married in 1941. His witnesses at the wedding were Lance Corporal Charles Edwards and Private Carl Wilson.

Sadly, he became ill in 1943 and was transferred to the UK and I understand he spent some time in hospital. My mother and two very young sisters travelled from Malta to be with him. They lived in London for about four years and then returned to settle in Malta sometime after 1947. I was born in Malta in the late 50's. My father didn’t speak much about the war and I was very young when he died in 1967. I would appreciate any contact from anyone who served with him.

Pte. Edward White .     British Army York and Lancaster Regiment   from Woodhouse Mill, Rotherham

My father, Edward White was a miner at Treeton colliery. He joined up in 1940 with two of his brothers. He joined the York and Lancs, Adam joined the Black Watch, and John joined the Duke of Wellington's.

My father was taken prisoner on Crete in 1941 and was a prisoner of war, first in Italy at four different sites, then transferred to Germany, Stalag X1-A where he stayed for the duration of the war.

EI White .     British Army 147th Regiment Royal Armoured Corps

EI White served with the 147th Regiment Royal Armoured Corps British Army. Sgt. Eric White .     RAF Bomber Command 426 Squadron   from Valence, Sutton, Kent

(d.13th May 1944)

Eric White 653213 was my father's great uncle and Dad asked me to try and find out as much as I could about him as he was never told. I was able to find out that he was the Flight Engineer of Sqdn 426 Bomber Command. He flew in a Halifax mark 111 serial NA510. Others on board were

  • Sqdn leader I M McRobie
  • Flying officer G W Bedford
  • WO 2nd class M A Brazey
  • WO 2nd class C A McLeod
  • Flight sgt A H Hammond
  • Flight sgt Bremrose

They took of from RCAF air base Linton-on-Ouse in North Yorkshire heading towards their target Cambrai, France. The Aircraft caught on fire and crashed near Villers-Les-Cagnicourt in Pas-De Calais on 13th June 1944. I believe once they knew they were in trouble they decided to evacuate the plane but Eric White and I M McRobie stayed on board to keep the plane level. It eventually crashed killing both on impact the locals found the body of Eric but McRobie was never found. A H Hammond, C A McLeod and Bremrose all managed to evade with the help of the locals but Bedford and Brazey were taken prisoner.

The locals buried Eric White in Cagnicourt and every year hold a ceremony over his grave.

Eric "Chalky" White .     Royal Air Force 426 (Thunderbird) Squadron (d.13th June 1944)

I found my Uncle Eric White's grave in Cagnicourt Cemetery last year. I also visited this year on Remembrance Day.

I donated a book of his gallantry to be book bound in French for the community and town hall museum. I met the old guy who at 4 yrs old was the last to see my uncle alive. He's now 74 yrs old and very patriotic as he holds the flag and places the flowers on Eric's grave.

Cpl. Ernest Albert "Chalky" White .     British Army 5th Battalion Hampshire Regiment   from Boscombe, Hampshire

Having been captured by the Germans in Tunisia on 27 February, 1943 my father, Ernie White, was handed over to the Italians and embarked on an Italian ship at Bizerta for Naples and then by train to PG 66 at Capua.

He received his first letter from his wife, Iris, on 15 May, enclosing a photo of herself taken in February 1943. On 16 June he was moved to PG 82 at Laterina. On 23 August another move took him to a working camp - No. 82/XV at Borgo san Lorenzo - where he worked on building a sugar refinery.

On 8 September 1943 Italy signed the Armistice and the prisoners of war finished work the next day. The Italians deserted the camp and the prisoners, having heard (false) reports of Allied landings at Ancona and Leghorn, fled into the countryside. After 3 days of liberty Ernie bumped into a column of German tanks and was recaptured (13 September)and taken the following day to an evacuated officers' camp at Bologna. On 16 September 1943 Ernie, along with many other P.O.W.s, were herded into railway horse trucks and after a nightmare journey of 4 days and nights via the Brenner Pass arrived at Stalag VIIIA in Gorlitz in Lower Silesia.

Cpl F. White, service number 6285200, prisoner number 250934 is shown as being in Stalag 357 at some time during the war. Does anybody know anything more about this soldier? I believe he may be one of my father's younger brothers and I am trying to find out what happened to them after their mother died in 1925, their father having died in 1915 in Gallipoli. I will try the Army Service Records for more information if I can be sure I'm looking at the right person.

The two younger brothers were Francis Philip White and Frederick Charles White, and their father was Philip Henry White who served in the Royal West Kent Regiment in WW1

Flight Sgt G D White MiD.     RAFVR navigator 635 squadron

Flight Sgt G D White is still alive and the father of my friend. He was "mentioned in a despatch for distinguished service", he cannot recall what for, would anybody have any idea. Pte. Hugh White .     British Army 2nd Btn. Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers   from 48 Spencer Street, Belfast

Hello I am researching my family history and have just discovered my grandfather's cousin, Hugh White was taken prisoner in 1940

This extract was printed in a local paper on June 24, 1940.

"Mrs.Hanna White, 34 Spencer Street, Belfast, has received official notification that her son, Fusilier Hugh White, of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, is missing. Fusilier White has been with the Inniskilling's for almost two years. He was formerly employed by the Belfast Corporation."

Hugh was reported as missing the day before his brother Samuel was killed in action. He was taken Prisoner of War in 1940 at Dunkirk and spent 5 years as a prisoner in one of the harshest POW camps, Stalag 344 at Lambinowice, Poland. This camp was in the Wehrkreis VIII region, Breslau (Wroclaw). Breslau became a fortress under Hitler's orders, as I read the personal accounts of the veterans who had been taken there along the 6 month death march from Dunkirk my stomach churns at what those guys had to suffer. It was the last camp to be liberated which was on St Patrick's Day the 17th March 1945.

With time we can forgive but we must never forget the sacrifices made for our country through all the conflicts by both Men Woman and Child both in our forces and on our Land.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
