Stories from 14th November 1942

Gnr. Robert Jones. British Army, 97th Field Regiment Royal Artillery. (d.14th Nov 1942)

I would love to hear from anyone who served with my grandfather, Robert Jones. My mother had no memories of him as she was only 2 when he died, she never even had a photograph of him. I am very proud of him and it is my greatest wish to find a photograph of him and find out what he was like.

Shelley Hughes

Bmbr. Sydney Skelton. British Army, 4 Survey Regiment Royal Artillery. (d.14th Nov 1942)

Sydney Skelton was born in Willington Quay about 1916. He was the son of Ernest W and Mary A Skelton (nee Henderson) of Jarrow. He died aged 26 and is remembered on the Alamein Memorial. He is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall.

Vin Mullen

Gunner George Hewitt. British Army, 1 Field Rgt. Royal Artillery. (d.14th November 1942)

My father, George Hewitt, Royal Artillery, died on 14th November 1942. He is commemorated on Col 35 of the Alamein Memorial.

Dolores Edwards

Pte. Albert Barker. British Army, Attch. 32nd Army Tank Bde. Royal Army Ordnance Corps. (d.14th November 1942)

My great uncle, Albert Barker, was a driver with RAOC and attached to the 32nd Army Tank Bde in North Africa. He was killed on 14th November 1942 when, as a POW being transported in an Italian ship, the ship was sunk by an Allied aircraft. Does anyone have any knowledge of this?

Joe Fletcher

Gnr. Edward Newell. British Army, 61st LAA Regiment, 197th Battery. Royal Artillery. (d.14th November 1942)

Edward Newell is my nan's uncle. He was a gunner in the Royal Artillery who died in 1942. He is commemorated on the El Alamein Memorial as he was missing in action, although on some records it lists him as buried at sea. Also, his theatre of war is on some records listed as at sea. Unfortunately, we do not know much about him, but that isn't for lack of trying.

Pte. William Fisher. British Army, 2nd Btn Cheshire Regiment. (d.14th November 1942)

Bill Fisher was my uncle, my mother's brother he lived at No 16 Gaskell Street in Wigan. He went to France as part of the Expditionary Forces, and was evacuated from the beaches at Dunkirk. After some leave he went back to war, and was posted to North Africa where he was captured.

According to my Mother, Bill was handed over to the Italians for transportation to a P.O.W camp (Mum says they had a telegram to this effect). But, apparently, the Italians put the POW's onto an unmarked ship, and we unfortunatly sank it. This is the story as told to me by my Mother.... I would love to know the full story of Uncle Bill's war record, and to know with certainty how he died.

He is remembered on the El-Alamein war memorial.

Chris Casson

Gnr. Leonard Douglas Young. British Army, 68th Medium Regiment Royal Artillery. (d.14th Nov 1942)

I'½m afraid I don't know much about my dads Uncle Leonard Young. I am currently trying to find out how he died.

Laura

Gnr. Cyril John "Wiggy" Wigg. British Army, 68th Medium Regiment Royal Artillery. (d.14th Nov 1942)

Apparently, Cyril Wigg was captured at Tobruk. As he and his colleagues were in transit on an old Italian tramp steamer en route to POW camps in Italy, whilst crossing the Med, the ship was torpedoed by an enemy submarine and all the POWs were killed. The Italian crew abandoned ship and survived.

Norman Cyril Wigg

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
