Drmr. Percy Johnson

British Army 22nd Btn. Manchester Regiment

from:Manchester

(d.12th Dec 1916)

Percy Johnson was my great uncle and a bugler in the Great War. I have a small autograph-type book which contains several poems written by Percy after he enlisted in 1915, some of which were written at the front. Percy was killed in action a year after enlisting and is buried at Redan Ridge Cemetery No.1, near Beaumont-Hamel.

Additional Information:

I believe Percy Johnson was the son of Walter and Jane Johnson who, according to the Census Record of 1901 were living at 197 Hulme Hall Lane, Miles Platting, Manchester 10, and were recorded as follows: Walter Johnson 46 years old, a Horseman, employed at an India Rubber Works, Jane Johnson 45 years old, a Housewife, John Johnson 15 years old, an Errand Boy in a Glass Works, and Percy Johnson a 6 year-old child. According to the Census Record of 1911, and prior to Percy Johnson's enlistment in the 22nd Battalion, Manchester Regiment, his Mother Jane had been Widowed, and was living with Percy Johnson at 17 Albion Street, Miles Platting, Manchester 10. Following his tragic death on 12th December 1916 in France, his Mother Jane Johnson of 17 Albion Street, Miles Platting, Manchester 10, is shown to be the recipient of an Army Pension. Rest in Peace brave soldier.
