217001 Pte. John Best British Army 1st Btn. Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment from:Dublin (d.15th Mar 1915) Pte. John Best served with the Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians) and was killed in action in Flanders in March 1915. Additional Information: | This man was my father's uncle. He was 18 when he was killed. His parents were Patrick and Elizabeth Best from Cole's Lane in Dublin city centre, just off Moore Street. He has a brother, William who was younger but joined the 8th Hussars later in the war. He survived. His father Patrick also joined up having received the news of his son's death. I'm told he died too later in the war but I cannot confirm this.
I've tried but cannot find out how he died, as in what operations he was involved in. I know he was killed near Ypres and I think there was on that date, a number of disputed trenches which were changing hands quickly enough. His name is on the Menin Gate memorial which suggests his body was never recovered so I assume he was killed by artillery fire. Any more information would be welcome.Robert Best

Patrick never died in the war he was discharged in 1919. I am the granddaughter of Willy and John's sister Elizabeth also known as Eliza or Betty. Elizabeth was born in 1904 and in 1911 she was living with her aunt Rosanna Best who was married to a man called John Maloney.
Patrick's wife died around about 1904 after their daughter Elizabeth (my grandmother) was born she can be found in the Irish census in 1911 under the name Eliza Best. Living with Rosanna Maloney nee Best also living in the house at the time was Patrick's brother Dennis Best.
I hope you get this message as I have other facts I can tell you, about John and the rest of the family.
