Capt. Jacob Andrew Norman Hessler

British Army 5th Battalion. Durham Light Infantry

from:Hartlepool, Co Durham

(d.27th May 1918)

Jacob Andrew Norman Hessler was one of two brothers, both were Captains in the 5th Battalion D.L.I. His brother was called Jacob Kruse Muller Hessler (Jackie) he was K.I.A. on 23/3/18. I am having trouble finding any records other than medal rolls. Their father was the Vice Consul to Norway at West Hartlepool.

Additional Information:

Captain Jacob Andrew Norman Hessler served in the Durham Light Infantry. Son of Norwegian parents, Jacob Kruse Muller Hessler (Shipper and Timber Merchant) and Killy Hessler, of "Wyndcliffe", Seaton Carew, West Hartlepool. He spent a short time at the school before completing his education at Aysgarth and then Malvern College. After leaving school he worked in his father's shipping and timber business. He was in the West Indies at the outbreak of war, but immediately returned to take his place in the Territorial battalion to which he had been commissioned a year previously, and deployed with it to France in 1915. Killed in action aged 25 years when serving as D Company Commander with the 5th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry during the Third Battle of the Aisne. He had married just weeks before, to Mary Park, of Newcastle. He is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France.

His brother Jacob K.M. Hessler also died serving with the D.L.I.
