162784 Pte. Thomas William Cooper MM.British Army 20th Battalion London Regiment from:Forest Hill, London My grandfather, Tom Cooper, joined up in September 1914, at the age of 23. He was awarded a Military Medal (which I have -- but I would like to find further details of the reason for this award). Sadly, he was gassed, which probably contributed to his early death (from TB) in 1946, but he survived WW1 and is recorded as 'serving with the colours' Sept 1914 to April 1919. He was demobbed in March 1920. Additional Information: | My Uncle, Christopher Chapman was listed missing in action on 21st May 1916 during an action at Vimy Ridge.He was serving with the 1/20th Batt. London Regimnent. I have a letter describing the action in which he was lost, written by a Sgt Thomas B Cooper.
At the time the letter was written, it was hoped that my Uncle had been taken prisoner and would return after the war, but sadly he was not heard of again.
If it was your Grandfather who wrote the letter and I think there is a good chance that it was, I should like you to know that it brought comfort to his mother and sister, his only sister who later become my mother. David Marquardt
