World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

JA Saunders .     British Army

JA Saunders served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Update: Unfortunately The Wartime Memories Project has lost touch with Dan, his website, facebook page and email have all ceased to function. But if you can add any details about the person listed, please use the add to record link below.

Pte James McQuillan "Sandy" Saunders .     British Army Durham Light Infantry   from Southwick, Sunderland

James Saunders is my father, who died when I was 15, that was 44yrs ago now, and I never got to know many details, and I only know now because of research. He was in Stalag XXB, Marienburg camp between 1939-1945. He was quite an intelligent young man, and I remember he could speak 12 languages, German being one of them, he told me of the time he would listen to the German soldiers chatting and unaware that he understood every word they were saying, he said he had a few laughs at their expense.

Marine. John Saunders .     Royal Marines   from Preston, Lancashire.

My late grandfather, Jack Saunders, from Preston was captured in Crete early 40's. He told me he was in Stalag VIIIb. He was a Marine and had ginger hair. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who remembers him. He recalls marching across country and staying in a sugar factory if that strikes a chord. He used to work for the railways.

F/Lt. John Saunders .     Royal Air Force 221 Squadron   from Coogee, Australia

My Dad, John Saunders was a bomber navigator on Wellingtons. He told me the story of how he was asked one time to fly a mission and would only be given the co-ordinates at the last moment. They flew 2 men to Crete to talk to the Germans. They stopped at the end of the runway with German guns on them, stayed there for a few hours and then the 2 men got back on the plane. They where not allowed to discuss the mission for 25 years I think he said. Can any body help me with this?

L/Cpl. John Thomas Saunders .     British Army 1st Tyneside Scottish Btn. Black Watch   from Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham

(d.21st July 1944)

JW Saunders .     British Army Royal Armoured Corps

JW Saunders served with the Royal Armoured Corps British Army.

Gnr. Kevin Joseph Saunders .     British Army 123rd (City of London) Light Anti-Aircraft Battery Royal Artillery

Kevin Saunders served with 123LAA as part of L Force (Harwich) and landed in Normandy on D-day + 10 hours, equipped with Bofors guns. They moved around Cann then forward through France and Belgium to the Arnham Nijmegen area, the unit were involved in the Rhine crossing and went onwards through Germany towards the Hamburg area. He survived and was transferred to 18 LAA Regt prior to discharge.

L Saunders .     British Army

L Saunders served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Pte. Lesley Arthur Saunders .     British Army 4th Btn. Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry   from Foleshill, Coventry

(d.25th May 1940)

Arthur Saunders was the uncle of my husband whom due to circumstances he never met. We always assumed his name was Arthur but recently found a photograph of him as a young boy, with a transcript of the back stating his name as Lesley Arthur. Due to this, we have just found his records on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. He is buried at Oye-Plage Communal Cemetery in France.

I also noted the following: Service No 5387367. L/Cpl. W. Caswell died 28th of May 1940 from the same regiment, who is also buried at Oye-Plage communal Cemetery. I hope someone finds this information of use in their search.

Stkr1. Paterick Saunders .     Royal Navy   from Heron Street, South Shields

My Father, Paddy Saunders told me he was on a Minesweeper.

Flt/O. R C Saunders .     Royal Air Force 76 Squadron

Pilot Officer W. J. Morgan was the flight engineer in LK687 Halifax V, from 76 squadron based at Holme on Spaulding Moor. The plane was shot down on a raid to Stuttgart at 17.01hrs on 26th November 1943 and crashed at Retzbach.

The Pilot and rear gunner both died and are buried at Durnbach War Cemetery, the remaining 5 crew members were captured and became Prisoners of War.

AB. Robert David Saunders .     Royal Navy HMS Argonaut   from Hendon, London

From my dad Bob Saunders service record he served on the Argonaut from 6th July, 1942 until 12th March 1944. Like many of his era dad did not talk much about what happened during his service. But I knew he was very fond of the ship and his crew mates and talked very highly of the Captain Eric Longley-Cook. I knew he was on board when it got torpedoed and limped back to the USA where they were given time to explore while the ship was repaired.

He was also serving during the Normandy landings where he was given some unpleasant duties which I will not go into here and the exploits of the Americans formed a life long negative opinion of the US military capability.

Ronald David Saunders .     Royal Air Force

I am interested in an incident which occured in WW2 in North Africa when a Royal Air Force water truck driven by my father was towed for an alleged world record distance. Any further details please. It was written up in, I think, Motor. Any photos/info/reminscences please. The driver was RAF, Ronald David Saunders, Service Number 1257421.

VCS Saunders .     British Army

VCS Saunders served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

P/O. William Anthony Saunders .     Royal Air Force 21 Squadron   from Reading, Berkshire

(d.17th Jun 1940)

On a mission to bomb Merville Airfield, on 14th June 1940, P/O William Saunders in his aircraft R3742, was shot up badly by Me109's. He put the Blenheim down at Ardres, and he and his crew (Sgt Webb & Sgt Eden) escaped. They got as far as the channel, acquired a rowing boat, and got to within 10 miles of the English Coast when an oar broke. Carried back by the current, they slept exhausted. On awaking, P/O Saunders was no longer in the boat. Missing presumed drowned, his body was never found. His crew were both POW's. William (my Mother's elder brother) was just 20 years old on April 17th that year.

F/O. William Lavallee "Saundy" Saunders .     Royal Air Force 37 Squadron   from Rockport, Ontario, Canada

William Saunders was Headquartered at 231 Wing under 205 Group in North Africa in Middle East Command. 70 Squadron was sister wing.

There are many stories to add later. My father flew just shy of 2 tours of duty at which time he was sent home to train with the RCAF. Bombing missions in North Africa, Crete and Malta. He even flew over Greece a few times but they were considered friendlies during the war. He died at 96 years young in 2012. He hunted and fished into his early 80's. If anyone has any more information about his crew in the war, it would be appreciated. I remember him saying his landing zone was LZ-109. His crew consisted of Brits, Aussies and a Kiwi.

Norah was informed 2 or 3 times her husband was missing/presumed dead, but each time, he was found alive and well. Sadly, my father T.S.A.
