Able Sea. Hugh Simpson .     Royal Navy HMS Pembroke   from Arminghall, Norfolk

(d.13th Oct 1944)

Flight Sergeant J O Simpson .     RAAF 460 Squadron

Pte. James Alexander "Tufty" Simpson .     British Army 2nd Btn. Seaforth Highlanders   from Elgin, Morayshire

(d.4th Jun 1940)

James Simpson was born in 1914 in Elgin, Morayshire. He was the eldest of three boys to Alexander and Elsie Simpson. James enlisted into the 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders aged 14yrs at Fort George and was a drummer boy. James re-enlisted in 1938 for a further 12 years and returned home immediately before the outbreak of war. James was still serving in the 2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders at that time.

On 18th of January 1940 the Battalion was at Aldershot and was inspected by King George V1. On the 26th of January the 4th Battalion sailed for France and was moved into position in the Maginot Line in the Saar Valley, France. The German advance in May 1940 bypassed the Maginot Line and the 51st Highland Division fell back to a new position on the Somme at Abbeville. It was stationed in front of the Ouvrage Hackenberg fortress of the Maginot Line and had thus escaped being encircled with the rest of the British Expeditionary Force at Dunkirk. It was then pulled back to a new line roughly along the River Somme, where it was attached to the French Tenth Army. For some time, it was forced to hold a line four times longer than that which would normally be expected of a division. The Division was attacked very heavily over 4th to 6thof June and it was on 4th June that James was reported missing in action believed killed during the attack on bridgeheads opposite Abbeville on the Somme.

James is remembered on the Elgin War Memorial

Pte. James Duncan Gowans Simpson .     British Army 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders   from Aberdeen

I received a full uniform set (tunic, kilt and accoutrements) belonging to James Simpson along with a series of documents. These included two paybooks and two certificates of service detailing his interwar, wartime, and postwar regular and reserve service. Simpson was born in 1906, and initially joined the Gordons on 11th of January 1925.

Being recalled in 1937, he went to France with the BEF and was at some point captured by the German Forces. He spent the majority of the war confined to Stalag XXB as PoW 19186 before being released at the end of the war. He received the 1939-45 star, the France-Germany Medal and the War Medal.

He rejoined the Gordons in 1947, transferred to the HLI in 1948, before finally being discharged in 1950.

Pte. James Henry Simpson .     British Army 2nd Btn. Durham Light Infantry   from Harwich, Essex

(d.23rd Apr 1944)

Jimmy Simpson was killed on Garrison Hill tennis courts in Burma on the 23rd April 1944 aged 21 years. This is the only information I have.

JG Simpson .     British Army Gordon Highlanders

Jim Simpson .     RAAF 460 Squadron

I just came across your website and thought you may be interested in Jim Simpson's story. He was 19 years old when he was sent to fight the war and was shot down on his first mission and captured by the Germans. Jim is still alive, 92 years old, independent and living in his own home on his farm. His story regarding the knitting of a rug whilst a POW in Stalag IVb can be found on the following website: http://www.manfromsnowyrivermuseum.com/home/rug.htm.

The Man from Snowy River Museum is currently raising funds to enable us to build a room to house Jim's rug and ensure it is preserved as best it can, to enable visitors to marvel at the resilience of the human spirit and what can be achieved in adverse conditions. The crew of the 460 Sqd Lancaster were:

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

    Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
