World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Rae R. J. Simpson .     Royal New Zealand Air Force

Rae. R. J. Simpson ex R.N.Z.A.F who was on the Halifax 5 LL122 KNY that crashed on the 9th Dec 1943, he is the only survivor and has written a dedication towards that event that has left him deeply scared today. The plane was called the Z-Zebra, the crew were:

  • Charlie Grob R.A.A.F(Rear Gunner)
  • "Junior"Hemming R.C.A.F(Mid Upper-Gunner)
  • Jimmy Clark R.A.F (Wire-less Operator)

Pte. Rennie Simpson .     British Army 8th Btn. Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders   from Nelson, Lancashire

(d.19th April 1945)

Rennie Simpson was my Grandfather. He was killed in Italy painfully close to the end of WW2. He was only 27 years old. He left behind his wife Ida Simpson and his daughter Eileen Simpson aged just 7 I believe. Eileen was my mother. Now sadly passed herself.

I recall memories of her saying Rennie was reluctant to return to battle, following his last leave. He believed he would not return alive. So much so he almost missed deployment with his battalion. Not through any cowardice, simply due to being so engrossed with his wife and child, time went by rapidly and MPs turned up at his door believing he was trying to go AWOL! He believed he had 3 more days when in reality he was almost 12 hrs late rejoining his Battalion.

Many years passed before my mum found his exact burial site. Thanks to MOD researchers she discovered details of the date he died, which theatre and how. They also gave her the details of his burial site in Coriano Ridge War Cemetery Italy. She then got the opportunity to visit her father's grave and say goodbye. Finally getting some closure to something that had left a gaping wound in her life.

A grandfather I had never known, but gave his life for me and many millions more besides, in order to secure a future free from tyranny and oppression. But for him and millions of other soldiers, we would not have the freedoms we now enjoy, the world over. To my Grandad and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice, I wholeheartedly say thank you.

PO. Russell Simpson .     Royal Navy HMS Europa   from Lynemouth, Northumberland

Sadly My Dad Russell Simpson from Lynemouth, Northumberland passed away in October 2014 aged 95 years. We have just found his RN diary .... no-one knew it was there. He was in the Royal Naval he joined HMS Royal Arthur in Skegness.

He then went onto HMS Europa and HMS Lady Shirley, and HMS Fairy Knowles at Tobermory (Note there was no HMS Fairy Knowles and this may have been a colloquial term for being absent at a hospital.) In 1941, he had a accident at the dock and went to hospital in Killearn and then onto The Cottage hospital in Oban. He was there for a long duration learning to walk again. Dad was the only seaman who was off on leave due to his injury when The Lady Shirley got torpedoed off Gibraltar on the 11th December 1941 and the men on board were captured and some lost at sea. He often said somethings were meant to be! He then joined HMT Helier2, an anti-submarine search vessel, at Milford Haven. Dad describes his job in the diary as in The Atlantic escorting ships and destroyers in rough sea and missing mines. He went to Australia and Tasmania and returned from Australia on The King George.

Cpl. Stephen Simpson .     British Army 8th Btn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders   from South Shields

(d.22th Oct 1944)

Stephen Simpson was my uncle, my father's brother. He was always spoken about in the family as a very gentle human being in that he was a keen follower of the Methodist order. My grandparents, as one can understand, were devastated by the loss of this son who still resided at home with them. But in an other sense classed themselves as lucky as they had another two sons serving in the forces at this time: the oldest brother, James, serving in the Royal Marines and my father serving in the Highland Light Infantry. Their coming home well helped to cushion the death of Stephen. Unfortunately, they were never financially well off enough to visit their son's grave and both died ignorant of any information about how, when, or where he was killed. Stephen was killed on 22 Oct 1944 and is interned at the Santerno War Cemetery Italy.

P/O T. L. Simpson .     100 Squadron (d.20th Oct 1943)

My friend, P/O Theo ("Tony") L. Simpson, seated second from right, failed to return on 20 October 1943. Having trained in Rhodesia, (Induna and Kumalo) he progressed to the following Stations.

  • Oct 42 - Dec 42 14 A.F.U., Ossington
  • Dec 42 - Jan 43 18 O.T.U., Wymeswold
  • Jan 43 - Apr 43 Satellite, Castle Donington
  • Apr 43 - Jun 43 1662 C.U., Blyton
  • Jun 43 - Oct 43 100 Squadron, Grimsby

I should be extremely pleased to hear from anyone who can identify the site or any of the other personnel in the photograph

P/O Theodore Leonard Simpson .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 100 Sqdn.   from Tiverton

(d.20th Oct 1943)

Pilot Officer T.L. Simpson, Lancaster Pilot, failed to return on 20th October 1943 and he, and his crew:

  • Warrant Officer D.G. Storey, Air Gunner
  • Sergeant L. Cohen, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner
  • Sergeant P.R. Cowling, Air Bomber
  • Sergeant C.W. Gibb, Air Gunner
  • Sergeant G.J. Godseff, Navigator
  • Sergeant A.W.N. Lower, Flight Engineer

They were laid to rest at Eelde General Cemetery, Gronigen, Netherlands. All were RAFVR with the exception of the Warrant Officer who was RCAF. As a workmate of Pilot Officer Simpson (and also ex-RAF) I should very much appreciate it if anyone could reply with any information regarding their last op that I can pass on to his surviving sisters, who would also very much like to hear from anyone who knew Theo.

Update: The information on the aircraft from Bomber Command Losses 1943: 100 Sqdn Lancaster, ED555 HW-A, took off from Grimsby at 17.46 on 20th October 1943 for ops to Leipzig, was shot down by a nightfighter and crashed at 22.25hrs at Eelderwolde, 5km NNW of Eelde, Holland. (Alan)

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
