My father, Albert Sanders, was in Stalag 9B. He never spoke about his time there but was angry at the fact that there was no support for him and others as they got older. I have a selection of photos of familly that were sent to him with the Stalag stamp on the back. He always wondered how such a bad place could be in such a nice area without anyone being alarmed.

Arthur Henry Sanders served on HMS Beagle during WW2 - he was very proud of his service and recounted tales of his time on board ship. Eric Victor Sanders .     Royal Air Force Regiment

Although unsure.. it is a process of elimination.. I am pretty certain that my dad Eric Sanders would have been on this carrier late 1945 during a passage to Singapore and on to Hong Kong. Whilst on board he got called to the office of Group Captain Edward John Corbally who had read my dad's pre-war records of serving as a silver service waiter in a top London Hotel and the Holborn Restaurant. Group Captain Corbally appointed Eric as his valet.

Group Captain Corbally was the commander in charge of the post liberation of Hong Kong ( from my dad's now vague recollection ) If anybody reading this could verify it. it would be useful.

Dvr. Harold Sanders .     British Army 501 Ammunition Coy. Royal Army Service Corps

I am in the research stage of writing the biography of Driver Harry Sanders who joined 501 Company (Ammunition) RASC of the 42nd Division in April 1939. He went to France with the BEF and was eventually rescued from Dunkirk in May 1940. Harold is still alive and I have his notes, but my problem is finding out about 501 Company. I have written to the museum to see what they have, but I really need more information on the company especially its time in France before Dunkirk. Company Officer names and their ranks are also hard to find. Any assistance anyone can provide and any other Veterans of this company you know of would be greatly appreciated.

Flt.Lt. Samuel Donald "Sandy" Sanders DFC..     Royal Canadian Air Force 424 Squadron   from Salter, Saskatchewan

Don Sanders enlisted in July 1942, and trained in Claresholm, Alberta. He travelled to Britain on the Queen Elizabeth in late 1943, and was eventually posted to Skipton-on-Swale for his Operational tour. He flew Wellingtons and Halifaxes, but Lancasters were the best! He was awarded the DFC for a raid on Duisburg, when he continued to target after losing one engine, dropped the bomb load and returned to base. Falling behind the bomber stream, the aircraft was more exposed to enemy fighters and flak.

After the war, he settled in Sioux Lookout, Ontario, where he married, raised four children and was a successful businessman and community promoter. He died in Sioux Lookout at the age of 65. Don mostly told amusing stories of his war years. He told of the time two members of his crew, after a night drinking in town, came back after curfew, and when stopped by military guards, tried to hold them up with home-made bows and arrows. He told stories of how the service men would go to the local pub, and after closing time, would often be invited into the private quarters of the publican's family for a feed of bacon and eggs. He talked about the easy camaraderie between the men. But he rarely mentioned the daily stress which took its toll on all of them. He formed friendships that lasted a lifetime, and when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer in his early 60s, he said he felt lucky that he had been given all the years that followed the war. After seeing so many young men die during the war, the rest of his life was a bonus.

This book was given to my father William Tanner who was in the same camp. Unfortunately I know nothing about Tom Sanders other than he was the artist.

AB. Alfred "Mac" Sanderson .     Royal Navy   from Middleton, Lancashire

Alfred Sanderson was awarded the Maltese Cross.

Arthur Gilbert Sanderson .     ARP   from Wood Green, London

My grandfather, Arthur Sanderson born 8th May 1898, joined the Middlesex Regiment in 1915 and was assigned to 2/7th Battalion. He disembarked on 1st of September 1915 and fought in WW1 in France, Flanders, Egypt and Italy. He joined up as soon as he was 17 and survived the war without injury.

After serving with 2/7th Battalion he was moved to 1/7th Battalion and then to 23rd Battalion. He was disembodied on Demobilisation on 21st of April 1919 and was awarded 3 medals, 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Allied Victory Medal, collectively known as Pip, Squeak & Wilfred.

He married Evelyn Jessie Sarah Bolter on 6th of September 1924 and they had a son. Arthur served as a Warden for the Borough of Southgate in WWII. He died in September 1993, aged 95.

Sgt Delmer Ray Sanderson .     RCAF 428 Sqd.

P/O. Frederick Richard Sanderson .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 78 Squadron (d.28th Aug 1943)

Fred Sanderson was my cousin. He was an Air Gunner and may, I think, have been killed on a mission to bomb Nuremburg. I know that he is buried in Durnbach War Cemetery but would be very grateful for any information it is possible to get about exactly how he died.

There are no direct descendants of the Sanderson branch of the family. His father's generation were lost in WW1 and I am still trying to ascertain the fate of his brother, John Henry Sanderson. Thank you for your help.

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
