Archie Pearman was conscripted in 1940 to The Royal West Kent's. He was also a Driver Mechanic in 15th Recce, C Squadron. After the war he may have served as a driver in Essen and also possibly in Nuremberg, I have no info as to what he was doing in either location. He also served as a driver at the No.1 District Censorship Station in Bonn from the end of the war until 1947, his discharge papers confirm this. Does anyone have any information about him?

Albert Pearson .     Army Leicestershire Regiment

My late father, Albert Pearson was a prisoner in Stalag IVB, prisoner number 227929. He arrived there via camp 66, Capua, Italy. He was in the Leicestershire Regiment, number 4868471, captured in North Africa early in 1943.

He spoke very little about his time in the camps, but he did say they woke one morning to find the German guards gone, and lots of Russians on horseback. He and two others then spent some time roaming around the area, spending some time in a railway station. On one occasion a local family with several daughters offered them shelter, my Dad felt this was to try to protect themselves from the Russians. They declined the offer, also fearful of the Russians. They were later rounded up by the Americans and brought back to England. I'm not sure how.

I would be very interested if any one knew him or could fill in some of the missing information. Thank you.

John Henry Pearson .     Bevin Boy   from Tallington, Lincolnshire

My Grandad, John Pearson, known today as Granddad Jack, was born in 1920 in Deeping St Nicholas in Lincolnshire. He was called up to be a Bevin Boy during WWII. All we are aware off is, he was based up in Nottinghamshire, he was based at three collieries, Cresell, Morton and TeversalL (please excuse the spelling) We as a family do not know more than this as Granddad does not give up his past that easily.

John Henry Pearson .     Bevin Boy   from Tallington, Linconshire

Granddads medals, on the Bevin Boy plaque.

My Grandfather, John Pearson, known by everyone as Jack was a conscripted Bevin Boy from the years of 1943-1945. He was at the time a farm labourer and worked the land in a small village by the name of Tallington, in Lincolnshire. He did his training in Creswell and worked at the Silver Hill, Manton and Tavarsall Mines. Other Bevin Boys working at the time with Granddad were Richard, Lee and Percy. He billeted in Manchester with a Mrs Eliot.

He was born in 1920 and sadly passed away at the great age of 93. He never really talked about his time with the Bevin Boys, but in 1999 I started doing the family tree and he finally opened up to his time during the war.

He was one of 6 children, and had 4 of his own children. I spoke to my Grandfather about getting the Bevin Boy Medal and he was not really interested but as a surprise for his 90th Birthday I finally got the medals he had deserved. I have visited the memorial at the National Arboretum and wore his medals with pride. I find it sad that none of my family ever knew about how big a part their father had played during WWII, as none of them actually knew he was a Bevin Boy, until I told them. I would like this story to be told as I think his efforts during the war should not be forgotten. If anyone can remember my Grandfather please feel free to contact me. Mr Melonie Jane Pope (maiden name: Pearson) Granddaughter of John Henry Pearson

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
