World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Dulcie Nellie Pearce .     Auxiliary Territorial Service   from Winterhead Farm, Winscombe, Somerset

Dulcie Pearce was my first cousin once removed and was also my Godmother. She was the only child of Reg and Maud Pearce a farmer's daughter living at Winscombe, Somerset until she joined the ATS with a great love of nature and animals. She loved riding and had a horse called Beauty.

Dulcie served as an ambulance driver in the ATS, starting her service at Wickham House, Clevedon, Somerset in I believe 1941. At Wickham was a Dr Thomas Johnson. I have an autograph book of hers with many, many names of women and men serving in the ATS. Dulcie spent a great deal of time at Crossways, Haywards Heath, but was also sent to Honiton, Castle Cary, Chester, Ormskirk and Marston Camp.

A few names that I can read in the book are:-

  • Corporal Cynthia Spraggett
  • Mary Flanagan
  • Elizabeth Whittington (nickname Dicky)
  • Barbara Burnes
  • Jocelyn Burnes of CRS Clevedon
  • J McLeod at Marston Hall
  • "Dilly" Radford
  • Dorothy Lister
  • E Beryl Jones
  • Bunty Bikett
  • Bobbie Wilson
  • Barbara Reed
  • Joan Sharpe
  • Lance Corporal Dorothea Leighton, No 2 Company, Heathfield Camp
  • Molly Wallbridge
  • Corporal Foley at Honiton
I do know that she had 2 proposals of marriage from a Neville (who came from South Africa) and also a Jimmy from Scotland.

If anyone knows more about Dulcie's time in the ATS or could give me her number so I could obtain her service records I would be grateful.

E Pearce .     British Army Royal Tank Regiment

E Pearce served with the Royal Tank Regiment British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

Update: Unfortunately The Wartime Memories Project has lost touch with Dan, his website, facebook page and email have all ceased to function. But if you can add any details about the person listed, please use the add to record link below.

Flt Sgt Ernest R Pearce .     RAF

I am trying to trace the wife or children of Flt Sgt. Ernest R Pearce who was a wireless operator air gunner.

I knew him very well when he was in the R.A.F as he was my Mother's younger brother and spent all his leaves with us. He was my Hero!

I have details of his last flight from Skipton on Swale when he was shot down and eventually taken P.O.W to Stalag Luft 3.

I remember him getting married to Hilda (in fact have the certificate) but very little since. I feel there may be children out there who are my cousins or even Hilda. I do know Ernest died but not where or when. So anyone with ANY info at all I would be very grateful.

F Pearce .     British Army

F Pearce served with the British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

P/O. Frederick William Pearce DFC..     Royal Air Force 357 Sqdn.   from Essex

Fred Pearce was part of 357 Squadron during 1944/45. Not only was he an amazing person, but an outstanding sportsman. During his career he played a multitude of different sports including athletics and fotball. He also kept many records and memorabilia from his service days including flights really order, which he had bound into books for safe keeping, his silk scarf, still folded, photos and stories.

One story we would love to confirm is that he was part of the crews who rescued the people from prisoner of war camps in Asia. His daughter-in-law's grandfather was one of these prisoners. We would like to try and marry up the records to see if Fred actually had John Henry Higginson on board during these missions.

Fred spent his entire life, apart from a few years as a police officer, in the service of the RAF, finally retiring as Squadron Leader in the 1970s. He spent his final days living in Woodhall Spa, closely associated with the Dam Busters, watching familiar aircraft flights from near by Coningsby Airfield.

I am tracing my father-in-law's family history and I know he was a POW in Stalag XIB at Fallengbostel between September 1944 and April/May 1945. He was captured at Arnhem. Does anyone remember him?

James Pearce .     British Army   from Oswestry

My grandad's brother, James Pearce, served in Africa in WWII. I think he was with a tank regiment and was (possibly) an officer. He was a keen boxer, of stocky build and had a brother named John who lived in Chirk.

Osman Parker "Ommy" Pearce .     British Army Royal Artillery

My father Osman Parker Pearce MBE, LLB; recently passed away. He joined the Artillery in Newcastle at the onset of the war. He fought in the desert and advanced then retreated through Greece. Finally he was captured in Tobruk and taken to Italy. The Italians were relatively pleasant. From here they were serially sent to Germany in cattle trucks. He spoke little of his time in POW, just to say that without the Red Cross parcels he would not have survived. He said the Russians were treated the worst. His 'job' was a tin basher. He avoided anything to do with food because it provoked fights. He studied and completed his accountancy exams by post whilst there, afterwards becoming a solicitor. In an interview for his American grandson, he said that his greatest achievements in life were surviving as a POW and being awarded an MBE.

I visited the camp site and museum a week ago. I do not think it was a time my father wished to remember. Throughout his life he would avoid arguments. Nothing perhaps was worth the anguish. He had dealt with things so much more extreme the pettiness of life did not come onto the same scale. He never said a word against the Germans. He may have told my mother more, but not his three children. He hoped for better for us and did not instil any prejudice.

L/Cpl. Patrick Kenneth Pearce .     Royal Marines 41 R.M. Commando   from Ryde, Isle of Wight

(d.22nd March 1945)

Gunner Reginald Ernest Pearce .     British Army 50th Battalion Scottish Rifles(Cameroons)   from Fulham. London

My ex-Wife and I are researching our family trees, as it is possible we may have already been related before our Marriage. She has found some references to her Father, Reg Pearce who was a gunner with the 50th. Battalion Scottish Rifles(Cameroons). There is also a reference to his being part of No. 284 Battery (AAKAAK), based at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

The unit had a pet cat. Every time she detected the sounds of the enemy bombers, long before the crew did, she would find her safe spot, but it was the signal for the lads to be ready, well in advance, of the enemy squadrons. One Italian squadron got a real pasting, and, having thus decided that discretion was the better part of valour, just dropped their bombs and fled, and, to this day, the waters of Great Yarmouth's Harboursmouth are still host to a whole collection of unexploded bombs, that. if moved, would wreck the whole of the town if they were to go off. Reg was also aboard the SS "Strathmore", and sailed to Port Said in 1945, being posted to Cairo and Alexandra, at the same time as my own Father, Will Osborne, who was with the REME Dance Orchestra out there. He returned in 1946 aboard the SS "Caroloinen"(Caroliner?). If anyone has any information, or any stories about Reg please do email and we can both enjoy sharing some history about our two families. Thanks in Advance.

(d.3rd Jul 1943)

Thomas Pearce died aged 23. He is buried in Moascar War Cemetery, Egypt.

Capt. Vivian Pearce .     British Army South Wales Borderers

I am trying to find some archive film footage taken sometime in 1944/45 while my father Vivian Pearce was seconded to the Canadian Regiment. At the time he was a Captain in the South Wales Borderers 24th Foot. Like lots of soldiers he was caught on camera, but the footage was used in a war documentary, which I believe was called "All our Yesterdays" during the 1970s.

W Pearce .     British Army Royal Armoured Corps

W Pearce served with the Royal Armoured Corps British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

    Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
