My father, Albert Nicholls, sailed around Africa to get to Egypt, and after developing tuberculosis during the conflict, was sent back around Africa, with a stay in Pietermaritzburg to recuperate and a stop in Capetown to refuel the ship and have shore leave. I have photos of him at the site of the Sphinx in Egypt, in the hospital at Pietermaritz and a scene from the ship at Capetown. In his writings before his death, he speaks of the friends he lost in North Africa.

Brig. Arthur Frederick Crane Nicholls GC, ERD..     British Army att. Special Operations Executive Coldstream Guards   from Swinbrook, Oxfordshire

(d.11th Feb 1944)

Arthur Nicholls was the son of Joseph Crane Nicholls, and of Josephine Crane Nicholls (nee Campbell); husband of Dorothy Ann Violet Nicholls (nee Schuster), of Swinbrook, Oxfordshire. He was 33 years oldwhen he lost his life and was buried in the Tirana Park Memorial Cemetery in Albania. His grave is now lost and he is mentioned on the Special Memorial E.

The following details are given in the London Gazette of 1st March 1946: "Awarded the George Cross for most conspicuous gallantry in carrying out hazardous work in a very brave manner." Brigadier Nicholls parachuted into Albania in October 1943 as General Staff Officer to the Allied Military Mission which organised resistance activities. The Mission was attacked and broken up by the Germans in December and from then on Brigadier Nicholls lived as a fugitive in the open mountains in freezing weather. He continued leading the remnants of the Mission but was suffering from frostbite so severely that he ordered an inexperienced man to amputate both his legs without anaesthetic. He was pulled over the mountains lying upon his greatcoat by two members of his party. He was determined to reach a British Mission to make his report upon which the course of the war in Albania would depend. He succeeded in this but had gone beyond the limits of endurance and died from gangrene and heart failure.

Mjr. David Nicholls .     British Army Royal Army Service Corps

My father David Nicholls was commissioned by Edward VIII on 15th February as a second lieutenant in the territorials. He saw war service mainly in the Middle East and Africa and after the war was stationed in London.

He married my mother who had served as a Wren during the war in 1946. My father went to Hong Kong. When I was old enough to travel we joined him there. He then was attached to General Templars' staff in Malaysia rising to the rank in 1952 of acting lieutenant colonel. He was awarded the MBE in in 1953. I remember the ceremony well. It took place at Government House Kuala Lumpur.

He returned to Scotland attached to the Black Watch in Perth before going to the records office at Ore Place, Hastings. He retired from the army and came to New Zealand in 1959. He worked for an engineering firm until he retired in 1976. He died in Auckland in 2002. His funeral was attended by the New Zealand Returned Services Association who gave him generous support in his later years. They played the Last Post and his coffin was covered with a Union Jack. Lt. Fred Nicholls MM, Croix de Guerre..     British Army 4th Btn. Queens Own Cameron Highlanders   from Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

My late father, Fred Nicholls enlisted in the Camerons in 1931, according to his medals, of which I have only his dress set, including his Military Medal and French Croix de Guerre. He had many overseas postings before during and after the war.

He was with the 4th Camerons on the Somme in June 1940 as a platoon Sergeant. He had to take command of the platoon when his commanding officer was injured and captured. After they ran out of food and ammunition they were ordered to surrender by their C.O. which they did along with the rest of the 51st Highland Division. After the surrender, the troops where marched toward Germany. According to his own story he stayed with his men until they crossed the Belgian border, it was at this point that he made his first escape. I am in possession of both his own account of his escapes and the official M19 debrief account. Whilst they do differ slightly, broadly speaking one confirms the other. He was incarcerated at St Omer after his 2nd or 3rd recapture. It was there that he met Sgt Andrew Faith of the R.H.A. both of them where like minded and they again escaped. After walking through France they eventually crossed the Pyrenees in to Spain where they were arrested and imprisoned by the Spanish Army. They were later released and eventually repatriated via Gibraltar.

After returning to the UK they where both awarded the Military Medal. It was after this that he attained the rank of Lieutenant. I have not got his record of service so where and and when he spent the rest of the war is a little sketchy. However he was posted to Aruba with the Camerons in 1941 and he was seconded to the control commission in Germany. He was demobed in 1947.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
