Gnr. Alfred Thomas Martindale MiD..     British Army Light Anti-Aircraft Royal Artillary   from Liverpool

I am the half sister of Tom Martindale, but I knew nothing of his existence until starting to delve into family history. We met for the first time just over twenty years ago, and just in time for he died shortly afterwards. I have since discovered how brave my big brother was. His name is on The London Omnibus List for gallant and distinguished services in the field, and he is "mentioned in despatches".

He was captured at Mechilion on the 8th of April 1941 and sent via Gapua, Bolzano, Sulmona and Aquila to Campo 78 in Sulmona. During his short time in Bolzano he and several other POW's had escaped from guards while out walking. He made his way towards Switzerland travelling mostly at night, but was recaptured and sent back to camp. He then escaped from campo 78, after the armistice was organised by the senior British officer, and walked South with another escapee meeting British troops at Termoli on 3rd of October 1943.

I am in possession of his war medals and ribbons and also of his prisoner tags and a signet ring on a piece of string. My half sister (his sister too) who is now 100 years of age has been able to give me most of this information.

I am looking for any information on my grandfather William Hugh Martindale. He served in the war either as Canadian Army or British Navy. My mother was put up for adoption at a very young age and so we have very little information about him, other than he did serve in the war and he was married for a time to Nora Shaw. They lived at some point in Ontario Canada. Thank you!

My father was in Stalag 7A from 1944 through to the end of the war. His name was Melesio V. Martinez and he lived in Karnes City, Texas. I would like to find information about him. My dad passed away before I could get him to talk about his war experiences in more detail than he did. He was a very decorated soldier. Can anyone help?

Update

Have you visited Moosberg Online? It is an excellent site which covers the development of Stalag 7A through the war and after.

1st Lt Daniel F. Martini was the Reconnaissance Officer of 172nd Field Artillery Battalion, Battery A.

Staff Sgt. Frederic C. Martini .     USAAF 551st Bomb Squadron   from Coney Island  NY

S/Sgt Frederic C. Martini, Flt Engineer.

Staff Sgt. Frederic C. Martini was stationed with the B-17's at Gt. Ashfield, Suffolk, England. He was a Flight Engineer & Top Turret Gunner. I lived in Stowmarket, a small town about ten miles from Gt. Ashfield. I had no idea my future brother-in-law was stationed so close by. I was only seven.

Later I would tease Fred, asking him if he was the American Air Force fellow we picked up along the road one evening, heading for Gt. Ashfield. We took him home to have a meal with us and my mother fed him the last egg we had, being on strict rationing at that time. I asked Fred if he was that fellow and his reply had nothing to do with eggs! Unfortunately, I can't tell you his reply here anyway!

Fred's B-17 was shot down three times. Once they ditched in the English Channel near a rescue buoy & were picked up by the RAF Air-Sea Rescue; another time they crash-landed in a British field; the third time they went down over France & Fred was taken in by the French Underground. However, someone turned him in & he spent time in Buchenwald until they were liberated. He didn't talk much about those times

My uncle John Martyn was the son of Lionel Hubert and Edith Martyn (nee Lanyon) of Rangiora, North Canterbury; elder brother of Allan David Martyn. Born at Rangiora on 1st March 1919, Jack was educated at Rangior High School. He played rugby and cricket at school, later becoming a member of the North Canterbury Football Club. In early February 1942 Sgt Martyn was awarded his Wings at RNZAF Station Wigram, and promoted to Sergeant Pilot on 28th of March 1942.

Sgt Martyn embarked for the UK on 13th of April 1942 and underwent further training on Airspeed Oxford aircraft at No 3 Advanced Flying Unit at South Cerney, Gloucestershire followed. Sgt Martyn commenced operational training on the Vickers Wellington bomber at No 11 Operational Training Unit, Westcott, Buckinghamshire from October 1942 and in December was posted to 428 (RCAF) Squadron, RAF Dalton, Yorkshire.

On 29th of March 1943 Sgt Martyn, having accumulating 47.16 operational flying hours to date, was on his 9th bombing mission to Germany. He was one of the crew of 428 (Ghost) Squadron, RCAF, Vickers Wellington B MkX HE-175 NA-U on operations to Bochum.

Despite a lengthy search later that day no trace of the aircraft or crew was ever found. All crew members were subsequently posted missing presumed dead .

WTel. Alfred Arthur Martyr .     Royal Navy HMS Nigeria (d.12th Aug 1942)

Alfred Martyr was killed in action on 12/08/1942 whilst serving on HMS Nigeria. I presumed then buried at sea. I see that the date is that of the attacks on the Convoy to relieve Malta, Operation Pedestal. The records show that the Nigeria was badly damaged in the attack.

Should anyone have further information on the incidents on that day or indeed any details regarding Alfred I would be very interested.

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

    Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
