F/Sgt Peter Richard " " Martin .     Observer   from North London

(d.11th Oct 1944)

I am researching the history of 58 former pupils of Highbury County Grammar School, London N.5 who died in WW2. Their names were recorded in a Book of Remembrance which was displayed in the School Hall in post-war years. It was unfortunately lost or destroyed when the school became a comprehensive in 1967 and the old buildings were demolished.

Shortly before Christmas 2008 I was contacted by a former pupil of the class of 1930, now 90 years of age, living near Shrewsbury. He kindly provided me with a copy of the Order of Service from the Memorial Service which was held at Highbury in June 1946. I am now compiling a new version of the Book of Remembrance, which we hope to have displayed in the modern school on the site, and in the Islington Borough archives.

I am also compiling a narrative version containing the stories behind the bare facts of their deaths obtained from the Commonwealth War Graves web site. It is recorded that F/Sgt Peter Martin was 23 years of age when he died, and was interred at Reichswald Forest Cemetery. I have discovered that 106 Squadron were flying Lancasters at that time, so we may infer that he and his crew were Killed in Action on a raid over the Ruhr, but his name is not mentioned above and I can find no mention of this on the Lost Bombers web site. Any information would be welcome.

BOY1 Peter Jack Martin .     Royal Navy HMS Phoebe   from Cumnor, Oxon

(d.23rd October 1942)

Boy 1st Class Peter Martin was the son of Charles Herbert and Beatrice Martin of Cumnor, Oxon.

He was 16 when he died and is buried in the Pointe Noire European Cemetery in the Congo.

On the 23rd October 1942, H.M.S. Phoebe was on her way to take part in operations off North Africa, when she was torpedoed off the coast of French Equatorial Africa. 46 men lost their lives in this engagement and 29 of them were buried in Pointe Noire European Cemetery in a large collective grave. This grave was later marked by a screen wall memorial, which carries details of all 46 casualties.

WO. William Charles Percival Martin .     Royal Air Force 39 Squadron   from Canterbury

The following are the first few paragraphs of a book written by Bill Martin.

Spring 1945 The Long March. A long ragged column of men plodded wearily eastwards across the Heath of Luneberg. It was early spring of 1945 and the weather was unusually kind and generous. Apart from a few streaks of cirrus, the sky was incredibly blue. A warm breeze fanned their faces as they struggled on.

Two days ago, half a dozen of these columns had left the prison camp at Fallingbostel, each one taking a different route but all heading in the same general direction, away from the war front, which was moving with mercurial speed as the shattered remnants of the German divisions fell back.

Since leaving the Stalag the men had not been issued with any food, they had depended on coming across earth-covered mounds of potatoes or mangold-wurzels. Since these comprised their staple diet for years a few more days or weeks was not going to do much harm. And so, they lived off the land like hordes of locusts.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
