Gnr. John Wilfred Marshall . British Army 5th Medium Royal Artillery
We have recently discovered letters from my brother John to the family while he was serving in the Second World War in Milan, Lake Como, Riccione and on the Austrian border.
He tells us of an incident while being transported back to Europe of the boat catching fire in the English Channel while being surrounded by about 50 mines. The letters are also full of good times he had with his colleagues and full of fondness towards his family,

Pte. Maurice Marshall . British Army 4th Battalion Green Howards
My father Maurice Marshall was at Dunkirk, and then sent to Southern England to regroup before being sent to North Africa. I believe that the 4th Battalion, Green Howards, of which he was a part, was in conflict with the enemy at a place called Gazala, after which I am in the dark, any information would be appreciated.
Norman Perry Marshall . Royal Air Force
Pte. Oran Marshall . US Army from Breathitt, Kentucky, USA
Oran Marshall spoke very little about his experiences as a prisoner of war, probably because he was unable to. He did say that it was a living hell, starved, beaten, and worked like a mule, with fellow prisoners killed alongside him. I would often see him staring into space for long periods of time, as if he was watching a movie of his terrible experiences which haunted him for the rest of his life.
I am so happy to have known this great man, who was so kind and enduring, my hero, my Dad. I am glad to have found wartimememoriesproject.com., and have read a lot of the stories, maybe my father would have known some of the people mentioned in them.

Father, Ray Marshall volunteered for DEMS some months after 11th Battalion Durham Light Infantry returned to the U.K. following the evacuation from Dunkirk. Depot life at Brancepeth Castle was not to his liking.
Originally he was only supposed to be manning ships on the coastal run down to London and the south coast. As war progressed,he was despatched further afield to India, Burma, Dutch East Indies by way of North Africa and South Africa. He spent some time on the transAtlantic route and one Russian convoy to Archangel. He was involved in Normandy landings on LCI, but a couple of days after D-Day. He was shipwrecked several times during his time with DEMS, but lucky enough to survive the war.

Can you help us to add to our records?
The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them
Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?
If so please let us know.
Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.
Celebrate your own Family History
Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.
Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
