Harold Edward Jupp .     Royal Air Force 166 Squadron (d.26th Feb 1944)

Flying Officer Harold Edward Jupp No: 171626, flew with 166 Squadron. He was based at Kiirmington, he flew a Lancaster and did his training in the USA. He was my mother's uncle. Unfortunately he was shot down on the night of the 26th February 1944 we think over Augsburg, we also think that he was shot down by a German night fighter flown by a Major Heinrich Wohlers - NJG6.

Four of the crew were captured, Harold and two others were killed and one escaped back to England via Gibraltar. I am trying to locate some further photos and information.

Gunner James Edward Jupp .     British Army Royal Artillery   from London

My father James Jupp was captured at Dunkirk. I have no details of what happened to him after that but he did end up in Stalag XX-B Malbork Poland. He said that he volunteered to go to a Horse Stud where they broke in the German Stallions. He claims to have escaped a couple of times but was recaptured. The last time he tells of escaping with fellow prisoner Harry Brough. They took 4 prized stallions and obtained passes and because my father could speak fluent German they kept moving along updating these passes. They rode from East Prussia to the River Elbe arriving at Wittenburg on the Western Front. At that point they met the Americans. Of course there was more to the story. This is a quick version of his escape but it made the newspapers in England on his arrival back home.

James Edward Jupp left England in 1959 on the Ship Fairsea as a ten pound pom to Australia with his wife and family. He passed away in 1987.I would love to contact anyone who might have heard of this story or might have further information.

Sgt. Caspar Harold Jurgensen .     RAF air gunner. 106 Sqd. (d.13th Jan 1943)

Sgt. Caspar Harald "Jerk" Jurgensen .     Royal Air Force 106 Sqd.   from London

(d.3th Jan 1943)

Casper Jurgensen was the uncle I never met. He flew a fateful 13th mission and was shot down by a night fighter and the whole crew perished. I visited Appledorn cemetary in the 70's with my mother to see his grave. After leaving the station, we didn't go to a large supermarket for flowers but chose a little shop down the road. When we told the owner why we were there, he showed us a photo of the grave they looked after during the war and it was my uncle's. Very strange and kind of lovely at the same time. The German's made them move the body from the local cemetary to the war one and later some of the commonwealth crew were moved to a Canadian cemetery.

Sig. Bertram Jury .     British Army Royal Signals   from Bargoed, South Wales

My dad, Bertram Jury was captured at Nauplion on 28th of April 1941 along with his good friend Elwyn "Tich" Jones and others serving with W Force in Greece. He spent the rest of the war in Stalag 383.

Drvr. Frances Simpson Justice .     Auxiliary Fire Service   from Eccles, Lancs

My mother, Frances Justice, learnt to drive at age 17 in 1934 and, I believe, worked as a chauffeur to a managing director at a steel works in Manchester. During the war she worked as a driver for the Fire Service in Manchester, tasked with driving the fire chief. She spoke of an amazing fire when a magnesium 'dump' went on fire and lit up the sky with a very white light.

Kenneth Justice was a prisoner at Capua PG 66 Italy. He was captured in the Eastern Desert in 1941.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
