My father, Denis Hay, served with the Royal Navy in WW2 aboard HMS Ithuriel. He didn't ever discuss the war so, unfortunately, I do not have any information other than as follows. I have just found his war time photo album with pictures of HMS Ithuriel and other ships. He mentions the Malta Convoy and a Catalina flying boat being shot down by the Vichy French fighters, injuring 2 pilots severely. When helping to take the plane in tow they were attacked by a fighter and destroyed it. They managed to rescue the wounded pilots. He mentions HMS Westcott, leader of the 13th Destoyer flotilla and other ships. They sunk an Italian submarine and the crew were blindfolded and taken to a prisoner of war camp.

Rflmn. Frank William Haydon .     British Army Kings Royal Rifle Corps

My father, Frank Haydon, was a Rifleman in The King's Royal Rifle Corps and was captured on 27th May 1940 at Calais when it finally fell to the advancing Germans.

He was then taken to Stalag XXB in Poland. He never spoke much about his incarceration. Whilst he occasionally mentioned the odd "humourous incident" he never, ever, went in to detail about the terrible conditions and treatment meted out to prisoners.

I have since learned through various books and publications just how vicious the Battle For Calais was and how harsh the conditions and treatment were for P.O.W's at Stalag XXB. He would have been among the prisoners who were forced to march back in to Germany as the Russians advanced towards Poland - which must have been a harrowing experience given what everyone had to endure.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
