Sgt. Edwin John Hawkins .     British Army 8th Army

We were told by family that my grandfather, Edwin John Hawkins, was a Sgt in the Army and that he took part in the WWII campaigns in Italy and Northern Africa. It was said he drove for Monty for a short while. Was this the Eighth army? I would really like to go ahead and apply for his Army Records but do not feel that I have enough information to do this. I would really appreciate some help if anyone has any knowledge of these campaigns.

F/O Frank Bryce Hawkins .     Royal Australian Air Force 207 Sqdn. (d.2nd March 1943)

F/O Hawkins was a member of the crew of Lancaster ED533 EM-N which was lost on the night of 2nd/3rd March 1943. The full crew were: Sgt R Isaacs, RAFVR Sgt R Brown, RAFVR, Flt. Eng. F/O GA Bissett, RAFVR F/S KG Peters, RAFVR Sgt WO Shelley, RAFVR, Wop/AG Sgt JW Webster, RAFVR F/O FB Hawkins, RAAF

The Lancaster had taken off at 1833 from Langar to lay mines in French waters. It was presumed lost over the sea. Sgt Brown, whose body was washed ashore on 27th May 1943, is buried in the Department of Basses-Pyrenees at Biarritz (du Sabrou) Communal Cemetery. The others have no known grave and are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. F/O Bisset was a graduate from Aberdeen University.

Pte. George Hawkins .     British Army 2nd Btn. Royal Sussex Regiment

George Hawkins (marked with white square) and some fellow PoWs at Arbeits Kommando E72

My father George Hawkins, 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, was in working party E72 for the duration of the war after being captured near Hazebrouk in 1940. It was the Hohenzollern coalmine at Beuthen. He was marched out on Jan 22nd 1945 and "walked the whole length of Czechoslovakia". The Americans eventually picked him up and took him to Erfurt. He returned home via ship to Tilbury, in April 1945. We would be pleased to hear from anyone who remembers him.

Sgt. Hedley Maurice Hawkins .     Royal Air Force 101 Squadron (d.21st Sep 1942)

Hedley Hawkins, born on 9th August 1920, was the son of Vera Hawkins and First World War veteran Samuel Hedley Hemming Hawkins, of Brisbane, Queensland. Sergeant Hawkins transferred from the Royal Australian Artillery to the Royal Australian Air Force in August 1940, and once he completed his training was posted to No. 101 Squadron of the British Royal Air Force.

Sergeant Hawkins was piloting Wellington number X.3457 when he sadly went missing during a bombing raid over the North Sea on 21st September 1942. He was 21 years old, and is commemorated on Panel 112 of Runnymede Memorial, United Kingdom.

WO1 Walter Hawkins DFC..     Royal Canadian Air Force 7 Squadron   from Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada

(d.15th Feb 1944)

Warrant Officer Class I (Wireless Op./Air Gunner) Walter Hawkins was the Son of Thomas J. and Emma Hawkins of Naicam, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was aged 25 when he died and is buried in the Skaro Cemetery in Denmark.
