RSM. William Haverson DCM..     British Army 2nd Btn. Norfolk Regiment   from Mulbarton, Norwich

(d.17th Dec 1991)

Mulbarton's Most Famous Soldier, Regimental Sergeant Major Bill Haverson DCM of the Royal Norfolk Regiment died on 17th of December 1991 in his 93rd year. The Haverson family moved to Mulbarton in 1940 and all the children went to Mulbarton School. Bill Haverson had already seen service in World War I, and between the wars had served in India, Gibraltar and the "Home of the British Army", Aldershot. Pauline had been born at Marham, Gordon and Colin at Aldershot, Peter at Farnborough and June in India.

The Norfolks were in France at the very start of World War 2 and in that desperate rearguard action leading to the miraculous evacuation of British troops at Dunkirk in 1940, Bill Haverson and his platoon succeeded in holding Aire Bridge on La Basse Canal in Northern France to allow battalion survivors to escape to fight again. As a result of this, he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, second only to the Victoria Cross in Military Honours. Bill became Regimental Sergeant Major of the Regiment and trained fresh troops for the now famous D-Day invasion of France in June 1944 which eventually led to the fall of Nazi Germany.

After the war, Bill left the Army to become Mulbarton's postman for 17 years. He was also a School Governor, Parish Councillor, Secretary of the British Legion and was largely responsible to raising money for the clock on Mulbarton Church tower, placed as a reminder of those men who fought and died for our freedom. He was also the local Poppy Day organiser. Always the disciplinarian, as befits an RSM, the rows of seeds in his garden were immaculately straight. The story goes that he slept to attention! He was a collar and tie man and was concerned about his appearance to the end. Mrs Haverson died in 1985 and Bill spent his last years in Wymondham.

Pte. John James Hawarden .     British Army Royal Signals   from Preston

Jack Harwarden and hut mates in Stalag XXB.

John Hawarden known as Jack, was in the British Expeditionary Force and was captured at Dunkirk after being wounded by shrapnel. Records show he was held in Stalag XXB. He didn't talk much about his time as a POW but did say the Polish women were kind to the POWs running into the street to give them food when they were being marched out of Poland and towards Germany.

Bernard Hawcroft .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve   from Barnsley

(d.29th April 1942)

I have found that Bernard Hawcroft, my first cousin once removed was killed in the raids on Clifton Airfield in April 1942. I have the newspaper reports and have visited his CWGC grave in Barnsley Cemetery. His death certificate states that he died of injuries as a result of a bomb blast.

FH Hawes .     British Army Royal West Kent Regiment

FH Hawes served with the Royal West Kent Regiment British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

WO. Gerald Maxwell Hawes .     Royal Air Force 244 Squadron   from Sandringham, Norfolk

My late father, Mr Gerald Maxwell Hawes who served in the RAF from 1940 to 1946 and was assigned to the 244 Squadron from 1943. He was a Wireless Operator and an Air Gunner (Tail Gunner) and his service release book states that his "R.A.F Character," was VG, which was the highest character which can be awarded in the Royal Air Force. The character assessment reflects the airman's conduct throughout the whole of his service.

My father died in 1992, unfortunately before I was old enough to appreciate the full extent of his service to his country and many of the details of his war experience. He had volunteered for service at the age of 17 and served until 1946. I am continually struck by his bravery and mourn the ability to be able to ask him so many questions of what it must have been like to lay in the tail of bomber night after night and witness such conflicting feelings of excitement, camaraderie and sheer fear.

My late father Mr Gerald Maxwell Hawes was a hero to me and deserves to be remembered for his honorable service to country.

SW1 Edwin Hawgood .     Royal Navy H.M.S. Pembroke (d.20th October 1944)

Shipwright 1st Class Hawgood is buried in the Upper Aghada Cemetery, Aghada, Co. Cork, Ireland.

Sgt. Cyril Vivian Hawke .     British Army 2nd Btn. Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry   from Wadebridge, Cornwall

Cyril Hawke was called up in October 1941 on his 18th birthday. He trained in Bodmin and Northern Ireland. Serving with C Company 2nd Btn, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry he went overseas to North Africa in 1942, stayed until end of campaign in May 1943. He then went to Italy landing at Salerno in autumn 1943 and fought through Naples, Cassino, Rome and ended up in Northern Italy by the end of 1944. He was sent to Greece in December 1944 and then transferred to the 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment (reason not known) and served in Greece until end of the war. He arrived home in 1945 and re-equipped to go to the Far East but whilst sailing through the Med the war in the Far East ended and they were taken to Libya to carry out garrison duties in Benghazi. Later he went to Palestine for garrison duties there. He was discharged in Canterbury on 5th of June 1947.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
