Pte. Charles David Handley .     British Army 7th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment   from Worcester

My granddad, Charles Handley, was based at Norton, Worcester in either the 7th or 8th Battalion. He was in the BEF and was left in the rear guard to defend the beaches. The order was given by his NCO that there was no chance of any of them getting back to Britain, so it was every man for himself. So my grandad threw away his weapon but kept on his uniform so he wouldn't be taken for a deserter or spy and made his way to Vichy France where he caught a fishing boat and made his way back to Britain. He was later sent to Italy and went missing in action but did make it back and returned to Britain.

Pte John Henry Handley .     British Army Gloucestershire Regiment   from Dudley, West Midlands

My Grandfather was Jack Handley. From his service record and recent geneology studies I know that he was held in Stalag XXb. From family history passed down I know he may have been on the long march which took place from Jan-April 1945 when he may have been injured. My Mom said that he didn't talk much about the war but one friend said that he may have had in the camp emigrated to Australia after the end of the war.

I would love to find out more about my Grandfather as he sadly died of stomach cancer on 22nd November, 1966 5 years before I was born. After the war he was a postman in Dudley, West Midlands, he was survived by his wife Gladys and daughter Valerie, who piecing together fragments may have been named after the place where he was captured Saint Valery in France.

I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me or perhaps where to research further as i would like my children and grand children not to forget the sacrifices that these brave men gave to secure their future.

L/Bdr. Raymond Handy .     Royal Artillery 273 Battery "A" Troop. 69th (West Riding) Field Regiment

At the end of WW2 my grandmother and grandfather met in Germany. She was a German girl, Ruth Netzker, and he was an English soldier, Raymond Handy. My mother, Barbara Netzker, was born in October 1946 from the great love they had for each other. My grandfather saw my mother just once in December 1946 when she was 1 month old. My mother has several letters, written by my grandfather to my grandmother, between December 1945 and January 1947. In his last letter, dated January 10th 1947, he said he was going on a trip to England and would write as soon as he had some news, but they never heard from him again. In 1956 my mother arrived in Mexico with my grandmother.

I hope that with all the new technology it might be possible to locate him and know if he is still alive or if he died, if he is happy and if it is possible to have a picture from him. I would love him to know that I am deeply grateful to him for giving me my mother. If there are any relatives I would like them to know they have a piece of their family in Mexico, willing to know them. And, "keeping my chin up" as he used to sign his letters, I will wait for any information regarding my grandfather.

He was involved in the planning of Operation Torch, and is mentioned in a few letters as being used to carry top secret documents.

After landing in North Africa he then took part in the Sicily operations and then landed in Italy. From 1943/4 he was based in Naples running an RASC office and I still have his pass to AFHQ. In 1945 he moved onto Rome and was eventually demobbed in 1946.

If anyone recalls Ted Hann, I would like to get in touch. I have his war diary for 1943/4 which I am trying to decipher and if any names come up I will try and tally them with any on the site.

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
