World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

F/O. Roland Charles Goodes .     Royal Air Force 576 Squadron

Stok. Albert William "Horse" Goodey .     Royal Navy HMS Havock

My father Albert Goodey served as a stoker on HMS Havock for three years. I have written her full history - she had eleven battle honours and was quite famous. It is named A Destroyer at War - The life and loss of HMS Havock from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean 1939-1942.

Drv. William H. Goodey .     British Army Royal Army Service Corps

William Goodey served with the RASC and was held as a prisoner of war.

W/O. Charles A. J. Goodfellow .     Royal Air Force

Charles Goodfellow was my uncle and he was a pilot at RAF Tangmere in the RAF.

F/Sgt. Colin G. Goodfellow .     Royal Air Force 107 Squadon (d.12th Jul 1941)

Flight Sergeant Colin G Goodfellow was originally from Ellesmere in Shropshire. I understand that he was sadly killed during a sortie over Ijmuiden in Holland whilst serving with 107 Squadron flying Blenheims on 12 July 1941. The family has always understood that no body was found although there may be a memorial.

On behalf of his family I am looking for any further information, which would be gratefuly recieved and help to ensure his sacrifice and those of his colleagues are never forgotten.

Cpl. Elenar Goodfellow MID.     Women's Auxiliary Air Force

My late grandmother, Corporal Elenar Goodfellow was stationed at RAF Thornaby from 1939 until 1945, we believe. I have a certificate which states she was Mentioned in Dipatches for distinguished service, whilst serving in the Women's Auxillary Air Force. The certificate is dated 14th June 1945. I have tried to locate this in the London Gazette archives, but can find no evidence.

I remember her talking of making parachutes, working in the fabric workshop. She also mentioned earning extra rations for packing some chemicals which turned her skin and urine yellow!

I would be grateful for any information or ideas where I can search further.

Ralph J. Goodfellow .     Royal Navy HMS Royal Arthur

I was at HMS Royal Arthur in September 1943. I was a volunteer and became a Stoker in the Royal Navy.

T/Sgt Leslie Coulton Goodhead .     RAF 77 Squadron

My father served with 77 Squadron from 24/10/42 to 13/1/44, when he was discharged unfit for further service.

He joined the RFC as a boy, serving from 25/9/1917 to 26/4/19, training as a fitter. He re-enlisted 3/5/1921 to 1/2/1927 becoming an engine fitter and serving in Egypt and Aden. He was in E class reserve and was recalled to service 25/8/1939. He served in France 27/4/1940 to 17/6/1940, when he was able to get a ship to the UK from Brest.

Prior to 77 Sqdn. he served at 11 FTS, 109 Sqdn., Leuchars, and 1473 Flight.

He died in 1967. I have his service papers and a number of photographs from the 1920s of various subjects, plane crashes, Aden countryside, sports teams, etc.

PFC. Lester Earl Goodheart .     United States Army 3rd Btn. Darby's Rangers   from Bloomington, Illinois

I don't know a lot of what my Dad, Lester Goodheart, went through, but I do know he was a member of Darby's Rangers, and was captured during the battle of Cisterna, Italy. He was sent to Stalag IIB. He hardly ever spoke of what he went through, but he did mention working on a potato farm. He received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart among other medals and awards.

J Goodier .     British Army Manchester Regiment

J Goodier served with the Manchester Regiment British Army. I have his unissued dogtags, made in preparation for deployment to the Far East and would love to get them home to his family. I am happy to cover all costs. If you are a family member or can put me in touch with them please get in touch.

L/Cpl. John Goodier .     British Army 7th Armoured Division   from Northwich

Pte. Joseph Goodier .     British Army Royal East Kent Regiment   from St. Helens

I don't know much of my dad, Joseph Goodier's war. He was in north Africa, and marched up Italy. There were only eight left in his company. He ended up in Klagenfurt waiting to be demobbed, where he met and married my mum. His best friend was killed in Austria, run over by an army truck.

RSM Thomas Goodier .     British Army 6th Btn? South Lancashire Regiment   from Warrington

My grandfather served in the first world war in Galipoli. At the end of the First World War he signed on again. When I asked my father why he would do this the reply was that he had been an iron moulder in a Warrington factory before the war and had no wish to return to his old job in civvy street. My father felt that, despite the horrors of war, he had enjoyed travelling and had no desire for the dirt and grime of an ironworks.

He later served in Ireland, where he met my grandmother, and eventually rose to the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major. He stayed with the regiment until 1945 and later become caretaker of the Drill Hall at Warrington for many years.

I recall him quite well, I was ten years old when he died. My father was a serving soldier by then and we were in Germany so I didn't see him at the end of his life. I do recall that he had severe asthma and he said that this was due to being gassed during the first war - I have no idea if that is the case. The asthma was so severe that he would never have been allowed in the army with such a disability so whatever the cause it occurred later in life.

I wish I had known more about him and his time as a soldier. As my father was also a career soldier we didn’t see as much of Grandad as we would have liked but he probably would not have told us very much in any case.

Rflmn. George Gooding .     British Army Kings Royal Rifle Corps   from Hayes

George Gooding was sent to Calais with only small arms while Dunkirk being evacuated. He was captured in dock area and marched and transported in cattle trucks to Poland. He worked in mines and sawmills and had his jaw broken by rifle butt to face. He said he would not have survived without Red Cross parcels. He was released by the Russians.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
