L/Sea. George William Good .     Royal Navy   from Bude

George Good, who worked with ASDIC during his wartime duty assignment, is still an Hon. Member of Bude Branch, R.N.A.

Tel. John Harold David Good .     Royal Navy HMS Europa   from Hyde House, Crescent Rise, Luton, Beds

My father, John Good, never talked about his time in the Navy, but these records show he volunteered from 12 December 1941 at the age of 19. He served as a telegraphist on HMS Collingwood, HMS Europa, HMS Badger, HMS Pembroke IV, HMS Hannibal and HMS St Angelo. The only thing I ever being told by my mother was that Dad would have been in the bowels of the ships so in the event of being bombed or torpedoed he would have had no chance whatsoever. The paperwork shows he was paid a war gratuity of 10 shillings per month for a total of 51 months and a post war credit in respect of Service as a Rating after 31-12-41 of 6d/day for 1587 days.

He was born in 1923 and passed away in 1990.

John Leonard Goode .     Royal Air Force 192 Squadron   from Tooting, South London

I wish that I had known about this site a few years ago when my dad, John Goode, was still alive. He would have loved to chat. He contacted his 192 squadron pilot Archie Gilmour in Australia and we had communicated with Geoff Start when he was researching his uncle's (192 squadron crew) family tree. Geoff has most of the information that I had available; Log Book, memories that he'd written down and a few photos. I think there was even a picture of his Halifax bomber before they painted out the 'Virgins Prayer' Cockrel.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
