World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Frank Finchum .

My dad, Frank Finchum, was at Stalag 7A. He made stoves to sell to other POWs. Does anyone remember him?

F/O. Jack Finding DFC..     Royal Air Force 83 Squadron

Harold Alfred Findlater .     Royal Canadian Air Force 429 Sqd

My Father, Harold Alfred Findlater, was interred at Stalag Luft 111 after being shot down over Dusseldorf on the 23rd of April 1944.

He was in the RCAF and came from Vancouver BC. The crew were

  • F/O E.L.Howland USAAF,
  • WO2 D.S.Brillinger RCAF,
  • Sgt E.A.Goss,
  • WO2 H.A.Findlater RCAF,
  • F/S H.W.Doiron RCAF,
  • Sgt R.Chamberlain RCAF,
  • Sgt Y.O.Young RCAF,
  • Sgt W.R.Adlard RCAF.
My son & I are trying to research Dad’s war history and I have found a photo of marked ‘British Columbians - taken 20 May 1944 at Stalag Luft 111, Sagan, Germany’. My Father is on this photo but I don’t recognise any of the other 28 POW’s that are also on the picture.

Harold A. Findlater .     Royal Air Force 429 Squadron

My Dad, Harold A. Findlater, flew in Halifax aircraft out of Leeming in 1943 with RCAF 429 Squadron, he was shot down over Dusseldorft on 22 April 1943 in aircraft LV963 and became a POW in Stalag Luft III. We brought my Dad & Stepmum up to Leeming in, I think, 1990 and I remember the staff showing Dad some details about himself in a book, but I don’t remember any of the details. How can I find out more about this please? My brother and I also came to Leeming to scatter some of his ashes, at the end of the runway, when he passed away in 2002. The staff at Leeming were very kind to us on both occasions.

My Mother was in the WAAF and also served at Leeming, and met my Dad there. They married after Dad was repatriated to the UK when the POW’s were liberated. Her name is Joyce Wilson later Findlater. I think she was attached to 427 Squadron.

Any information that anyone can give me would be much appreciated.

Flt.Sgt. James Findlay .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 207 Squadron (d.15th Oct 1944)

Flight Sergeant (Flight Engineer) James Findlay is buried in a Collective Grave in the Laastrup Churchyard in Denmark.

L/Cpl. James Wilson Findlay .     British Army 6th Btn. Black Watch (d.28th May 1940)

Sgt. John Findlay .     RAF(VR) 101 Sqd.   from Dundee, Scotland

(d.1st Sep 1943)

Sgt. Peter W. Findlay .     RAF W/op 460 Sqd.   from Dundee, Scotland

(d.30th May 1943)

Rodrick McCaviar Findlay .     Royal Air Force   from Grimsby

My grandfather, Rod Findlay, was based at RAF Binbrook. I'm not sure what he did but my grandmother and their six children lived in a caravan just outside the RAF base. He was also based in Hong Kong and Malta.

L/Cpl. Thomas Duggan Findlay .     New Zealand Expeditionary Force 4th NZ Field Ambulance   from Canterbury, New Zealand

Tom Findlay was left behind after evacuation of Crete and taken POW on the 1st of June 1941.

Sgt. R. C. Findlayson .     Royal Air Force 166 Squadron

Because of a soldier's bible, I am involved with Tain Museum in the north of Scotland and have become involved in researching a Roderick Finlayson who was a piper in the First World War. Members of his family moved to Aberdeen-shire and I have established that a Rory Finlayson (possibly a nephew) left the area about 1939 to join the RAF to be a pilot. (Rory may be a family name for Roderick)

I have received a copy extract from Bomber Command Losses 1945. On page 93 it relates that Lancaster 111 from 166 Squadron, operating out of RAF Kirmington was shot down over Pforzheim; two of the crew survived; one being a Sgt. R. C. Finlayson who became a POW. On page 206 listing POW's Jan - May 1945 and under Squadron 166 Sgt. R.C. Finlayson is also listed there. I am trying to confirm if Sgt. Finlayson is a a member of the family I am researching. Can anyone help?

He was then posted to 519 Sqn at Wick, Scotland. Where his duties included meteorological reporting and searching for enemy submarines and surface shipping over the North Sea up into the Arctic. If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
