World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

L/Cpl. George Bertram Ecclestone .     British Army 5th Battalion Queen's Own Royal West Kent   from Stansted, Essex

(d.7th September 1942)

George Bertram Ecclestone was born in Newmarket in 1918 and grew up in Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex. He was known to the family as Bertram. After leaving school in 1937 he joined Barclays Bank in London. Just prior to the war he joined the Territorials and at the outbreak of war enlisted in the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment, 5th Battalion.

In February 1940 he went to serve with the British Expeditionary Force in France, his battalion being involved in several battles including the Battle of Nieppe Forest. Bertram was evacuated from Dunkerque on one of the last boats to England. His sister recalls: 'He was uninjured. At home he slept solidly for days from complete exhaustion.'

In May 1942 Bertram's regiment set sail for the Middle East, arriving at Suez in July. Here they spent a few weeks training in desert warfare and on 14th August 1942 the order came to join the Eighth Army under Montgomery immediately. The 5th Battalion Royal West Kents soon went into battle at Alam Halfa on 3rd September 1942. Here they met with very strong resistance and suffered heavy casualties. His sister recalls: 'He was missing for several days, and was found in a German prisoner of war camp. His right knee had been shot away and he could not survive.' Bertram died of his wounds on 7th September 1942. He is buried in a war grave at El Alamein

The November/December 1942 Barclays Bank staff magazine pays the following tribute: 'with his attractive personality he had become popular with his colleagues. He was a keen swimmer, a member of the swimming section of the Bank's sports club and a water polo player of promise. His death is deeply regretted by all who knew him.'

F/Sgt. Frank Shepley Edgar .     Royal Air Force 622 Squadron   from Hikurangi, Northland NZ

(d.24th Aug 1943)

Frank Edgar was a friend of my aunt. They had worked in a department store in Whangarei, New Zealand. He went to Canada to train before going to the UK and joining Bomber Command based at RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk. 622 Squadron was established on 13th of August 1943 and conducted attacks on German industrial targets until April 1945. Flying a Stirling MIII BF251 the crew departed on 23rd of August 1943 at 20.45 hours, The Operation Name was Berlin. Frank's aircraft crashed near Doberitz, Germany on 24th of August 1943. Frank was aged 24. His name is on the RAF War Memorial at Runnymede and on the War Memorial in Whangarei NZ.

Patricia Edgar .     Land Army

I would like to make contact with the other girls, I met during my 22 months service, with the Womens Land Army Our base was Westcombe Hostel Dyke Road Brighton Sussex. I stayed there roughly two years, till the end of the war. I do remember Doris Baker from London, Edna Muggridge and Jean Ellis It would be lovely to meet up and chat about old times.

Ord.Sea. Tom Edgar .     Merchant Navy MV Empire McMahon

As an O.S. I joined a MAC tanker just after the war. My immediately previous vessel had also been an Anglo Saxon tanker. The MV Niso. The Empire McMahon, one of four hybrid carriers was eventually left, by us, in Genova for the removal of the flight deck. I am currently writing a fictional novel which involves the MAC vessels. I've never seen any accounts of their wartime activity. They were bad enough in peace time rough weather with an exaggerated top heavy roll. It seems the hair raising experiences of pilots landing on these postage stamp flight decks was never recorded. If any one is still around who can give me information which I can incorporate into my story it would be appreciated. It is just one way I can pay homage to these R.N and M.N Navians. It was, jokingly, suggested that the acronym M.A.C was not Merchant Aircraft Carrier but Mad Avian Crew. adopted from the CAM boats Catapult Activated Madman.

My uncle, Ronald Edgecombe, joined the Norfolk Regiment in 1936, He was a bass drummer in the regimental band. We always assumed he was killed in the massacre, but in the 1970s I discovered he was wounded some two or three weeks before the massacre. Unfortunately, there is no record of this, and further searching has not found any trace of him or his great mate Sgt. Kelley.

    Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
