World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

Gnr. George Thomas "Happy" Day .     British Army 1st Maritime Regiment Royal Artillery   from Portsmouth

Royal Maritime Artillery service certificate

George Day was the eldest son of a Royal Marine and was educated at the Greenwich Naval School. Later and whilst he was there, this became the Royal Holbrook Hospital School. George would later serve in the Royal Hampshire Regiment before transferring to the Maritime Royal Artillery, serving the latter from October 1942 until March 1946. George was originally from Portsmouth but as a serviceman his home port was Liverpool. He received some gunnery training in the United States and his service ultimately saw him visit many parts of the world. In Italy he saw the survivors of his old regiment the Hampshires who had been decimated at Monte Cassino. He served during Atlantic convoys and on one occasion reunited as planned with his younger brother in the lobby of the Empire State Building. Both men had crossed the Atlantic on different ships. His brother was a sailor in the Royal Navy. George lived out most of his life post-war in Castle Cary, Somerset. He passed away in 1986.

John Day .     Royal Navy Royal Marines

Pte. John Francis Day .     British Army 2nd Btn. Middlesex Regiment   from Woodford Green, Essex

(d.16th May 1940)

L/Cpl Joseph Walter "Darkie" Day .     British Army C Company, 1st Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infanty   from London

L/Cpl. Len Joseph Day .     British Army 7th Btn. York and Lancaster Regment   from London

My father Len Day served with the 7th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment. I have a photo of a memorial in Rangoon Burma which I found after my mother died recently it shows seven men: Captain C Smith, Sgt. Jones E.J, Pte. F Darley, Pte. Doyle, Pte Milner, Pte. Stoyles, Pte. Stride lost whilst on active service at sea on 15th November 1942. My father never spoke about this whilst he was alive. I believe he was in this action because he once said to me "I felt the ship was going to sink so I released my rounds of ammo and was able to swim to relative safety" that was the only thing ever he told me about.I think they were on a mission to put out various Japanese machine gun positions but I am not sure. My father never claimed his medals and very rarely spoke about the war, never went to reunions or anything like that.

Ldg. Torpedoman Leonard George Edward Day .     Royal Navy H.M.S. Cairo   from Portsmouth

Cpl. Leonard Mark Day .     British Army 5th Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment   from Dartford, Kent

(d.24th Aug 1942 )

My Great Uncle Len Day served in 5th Btn, Royal West Kent Regiment. The only information I have on him is a paper cutting from the Daily Herald dated 24th of August 1942, spookily the day he was killed in El Alamein and from my Nan who has now sadly passed away. The paper cutting gave his rank as a Lance Sergeant, and stated that he was evacuated at Dunkirk on the Crested Eagle.

After 2 years of training, the battalion was posted to Egypt. Whilst en route to Egypt, on the troopship believed to be Orontes, he became the middle-weight boxing champion! Sadly my Grandfather, who also served in 1st Btn, Royal West Kent Regiment. Len never really talked about his experiences.. like many others! My nan seemed to think that Uncle Len was killed by a mine. If so I believe this would have been on the lead up to Battle of Alam El Halfa as I believe 5th Bn was positioned in New Zealand Box area. Any information would be greatly received

The aircraft crew who lost their lives were

  • F.O. IJF Rich

Two members were apparently saved by parachute, but were imprisoned by the Germans. A copy of my uncle's RAF Observers & Air Gunner's Flying Logbook is now in a local museum near to his grave in Neiuw-Dordrecht:

Collectie Brands (Hans Brands), Heerenstreek 11, 7885 AT, Nieuw Dordrecht.

If any surviving family members of the aircrew wish to they can make contact with me.

Rita Irene Day .     Women's Land Army   from 64 Priory Estate, South Elmsall, West Yorkshire

My late wife, Rita Irene Day nee Summerscales, was in private service with Mr & Mrs David Brown of David Brown Tractors later Aston Martin cars. At Meltenham Nr. Huddersfield.

Rita decided that she would like to join the Women's Royal Naval Service but after talking this over with her Dad he suggested it would be better joining The Womens Land Army. Rita joined the WLA and was based at the hostel in Shortbank Road Skipton, North Yorkshire. She trained as a tractor driver and was involved in the ploughing of meadowlands to plant food production in our country's desperate need for food.

Rita was also involved in all types of agricultural work, harvesting, threshing, etc etc. At times this was a very dirty and heavy work, even long hours for the sum of one shilling an hour (now 5p). The normal hours per week were forty eight, plus two hours free for the Country. Many hours were expected according to demand on harvesting, etc. etc. From the week's wages of £2.8 deduction for food and accommodation at the hostel was twenty shillings (£1) leaving the sum of £1.8 to live of.

Living in the hostel with about forty other girls, they were a very happy lot when they had time to relax. I was serving in the Royal Air Force as a motor driver mechanic, and started a pen friendship with Rita. Later on a week end off duty I hitched hiked from my camp at Freckleton Lancashire to Skipton for our first date. This happened again and we fell in love.

A year later we were married on 15th July 1947. Rita later left the WLA and moved to my home City of Edinbugh in 1949 I was demobbed from the RAF and we settled down here.

Later a former Land Girl from Skipton started a annual reunion in various districts in the Yorkshire Dales. We attended as many as we could over the years, and after 60 years it was decided to finish, due to the decline in numbers. Later when the Armed forces veterans badge was issued, I thought the Land Girls were in need of recognition and started a campaign for a form of medal or some type of award. After 60 years a special WLA badge was issued at last. God bless the WLA/WTC.

AC. Robert Edward Day .     Royal Canadian Air Force

My father, Robert Day, was part of the ground crew for the Lancaster stationed in Darlington.

Robert Leonard Day .     Auxiliary Fire Service   from Southend on Sea

My father Len Day, served in the Auxiliary Fire Service at Southend on Sea, Essex during WW2 and said he was No1 Driver of the pump escape. He said he drove a Landrover type fire engine to the end of the pier to see if it was possible to access the end of the pier where ships docked. On one occasion the crew told him to slow down as he would arrive at the site of the fire before all the bombs had finished dropping. I understand that he also attended fires at Norwich in the Carrow Way Works the Colmans mustard factory, oil tank fires at Thanes Haven and Purfleet along with the Blitz in London. He recited several stories from these but too many to report here.

Victor Day .     British Army   from Whitchurch, Hampshire

My grandfather was a Desert Rat 8th Army. His name was Victor Day. Unfortunately he passed away a year before I was born. My mother told me that my grandfather never spoke of the war. We then found, in a secret draw in a Victorian cupboard that belonged to him, 10 years later a personal letter addressed to my grandfather from the King of Greece stating my grandfather was indeed a personal bodyguard to the King of Greece just after the war.

I would love to be able to find some photos of my grandfather in the desert if anyone could help please.

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
