Robert Leonard Day

Auxiliary Fire Service

from:Southend on Sea

My father Len Day, served in the Auxiliary Fire Service at Southend on Sea, Essex during WW2 and said he was No1 Driver of the pump escape. He said he drove a Landrover type fire engine to the end of the pier to see if it was possible to access the end of the pier where ships docked. On one occasion the crew told him to slow down as he would arrive at the site of the fire before all the bombs had finished dropping. I understand that he also attended fires at Norwich in the Carrow Way Works the Colmans mustard factory, oil tank fires at Thanes Haven and Purfleet along with the Blitz in London. He recited several stories from these but too many to report here.
