Sgt James Lawson Blackwood .     Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 90 Sqdn   from Ayr

(d.2nd Dec 1943)

I believe James Blackwood to be a member of my extended family and his death is commemorated on the War Memorial in Wellington Square, Ayr. However, there is no next of kin details recorded on the CWGR website. Can anyone fill in some of the obvious gaps, eg why is he buried in Esbjerg Cemetery, Denmark, does anyone have any information which might help trace close relatives? Any help, however small will be greatly appreciated.

Pte. William "Blackie" Blackwood .     Army 9th Btn. Durham Light Infantry   from Sunderland, Co Durham

William Blackwood

I can only speak on behalf of my father who would never talk much about his days in World War 2. He served in North Africa he used to say to me he wasn't frightened of anyone he was fighting apart from a tribe named the Fuzzy Wuzzys, he told me they scared him to death. He used to say about the maggots that were in his cigarrettes and food and how he dreamt of his roast beef yorkshire pudding dinners. My dad went into the army after being ill with pernicious anemia, at that time there was very little cure for it, he eventually got well but was still weak and told that he should not join the army, he made sure he joined to fight for his country. The sadness of all this is when he returned home there wasn't many jobs to seek. It saddens me that I did not find out more about his days in World War 2 as I was quite young when he died. I have photographs of him with his friends in Africa but would love to hear from anyone who served there with him.

David spent six months in a POW camp at Benghazi, and was then shipped to Italy. He worked as farm labourer on an estate near Brindisi until September 1943 when he was trucked to Germany (Stalag 8A at Goerlitz). He was sent to work in a sugar factory in Schweidnitz in southern Poland for nine months. David returned to Goerlitz for six months, and then was sent to a lumber mill in the Black Forest. He returned to Goerlitz in time to start the 500-mile walk westward, ending up at Kreiensen, from which he escaped in April 1945. He was demobilized in May 1945. He returned to England and then to South Africa.

Arthur Frederick Blain .     British Army Parachute Regiment

My Uncle Arthur Blain served in the 1st British Airborne Division and was captured in the town of Arnhem in September 1944. He was kept at the Stalag 9C, Mulhausen camp. At some point during the battle he was sent to find help as his group was cut off in the town. He took cover behind a rock and had his big toe shot off. He went back to Arnhem for the 50th anniversary.

Many years after the war, when we were growing up, he would tell my sisters he lost his big toe in the strawberry patch and they would look for hours in the garden for his toe.

Flight Lieutenant C E Blair DFC.     RCAF 59 Squadron

F/O. Pilot Ernest Anthony Blair .     New Zealand Air Force No. 172 Squadron, RAF   from Bayswater, Auckland, New Zealand

(d.13th Apr 1942)

A memorial to five air crew of a Wellington bomber was discovered by my son and family during a cliff walk in Devon. A keen family historian, I was determined to find out about "these boys", and so the journey began. All five names have been submitted to your website and they are all buried in the Heaton Punchard (St. Augustine) Churchyard, Devon. Four are side by side, and one a row behind. Their plane crashed at the base of the cliffs where their memorial was erected in 1988. The crash happened on the 13th April 1942, and as I understand it the 172 Squadron RAF was only formed on the 4th April 1942. These are the five: Ernest Blair was from New Zealand; Hamar Russ was Canadian; and Charles Daniel, Frederick Le Bon and Leslie Noble were British. We hope to visit their graves, now that we know where they are. R.I.P.

Pte. Jack Blair .     British Army Seaforth Highlanders   from Port Glasgow

My Uncle Jack Blair was a private in the Seaforth Highlanders. He served in France in 1939 and was fortunate enough to be evacuated at Dunkirk where he had taken shrapnel which was never removed from his body. A good friend Don was captured by the Germans and Jack later found out that Don had taken his own life on route to internment at a POW camp.

Jack also served in the North African campaign possibly present and fought at El Alamein and also served in Italy where he fought at Monte Cassino. He remembered crouching in his foxhole at night on many occasions feeling his helmet being touched by a hand followed by a grinning Gurkha smiling at him brandishing a Kukri saying 'you ok tommy sleep well' before they crawled off into the night in search of an enemy helmet.

Jack never spoke about his wartime experiences to his family but told me one evening when I was around 16 a matter of months before he passed away in 1979.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
