Arthur Frederick Blain
British Army Parachute Regiment
My Uncle Arthur Blain served in the 1st British Airborne Division and was captured in the town of Arnhem in September 1944. He was kept at the Stalag 9C, Mulhausen camp.
At some point during the battle he was sent to find help as his group was cut off in the town. He took cover behind a rock and had his big toe shot off.
He went back to Arnhem for the 50th anniversary.
Many years after the war, when we were growing up, he would tell my sisters he lost his big toe in the strawberry patch and they would look for hours in the garden for his toe.
