World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

F/Lt. Ernest "Birch" Birchley .     Royal Australia Air Force No. 42 Squadron   from Brisbane, Australia

My father, Ernest Birchley was flying Beaufort Bombers and stationed at RAf Leuchars during 1941 and 1942. He was shot down while attacking the Prinz Eugen in 1942 and spent the remainder of the war as a POW in Stalag Luft 3 in Germany.

Spr. Alexander Bird .     British Army 505th Field Coy. Royal Engineers   from Lambeth

(d.21st Jul 1944)

After the war a pal of my grandfather, Alexander Bird knocked on the door to tell the family that he was killed from a blast whilst walking along side a vehicle that drove over a mine. From my research, the unit was mine clearing in the area by the Chateau De Cordillion. He is buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery at Chouain, Normandy.

Spr. Alfred Bird .     British Army Royal Engineers

I am trying to find any information on my father Sapper Alfred Bird, Royal Engineers who was held captive in both Stalags XX1B and XX1D throughout the whole of the war. He died when I was only 13 years old. My mother is 92 years. I would dearly love to find out anything about these camps or anyone who may remember him. Christine Shaw

Pte. Arthur Richard "Birdy" Bird .     British Army   from Redditch, Worcestershire

Cpl. Arthur John "Dickie" Bird .     Royal Navy Portsmouth Royal Marine Commando, "G" Coy   from 5 Anglesey Road, Enfield, Middx.

Several medals were lost during house move in early fifties. My father was first a Marine, then corporal then sergeant. He was unlucky on HMS Manchester and HMS Ark Royal.

My father, Dickie Bird, was a very brave man and did the best he could in another pointless war along with all the other men and women who fought for their country and freedom for their helpless families.

Sgt. Arthur John "Dickie" Bird .     Royal Marines HMS Copra   from Portsmouth

My father Arthur Bird was engaged in many undercover missions, ID no name no pack drill, to this day his Royal Marine history is still very secret. I would like help to uncover the rest of his service histor, I would be much obliged. I have a rough outline of some of his 7 years in service with a lot missing from the Royal Navy Marines Society. He died in 1981.

My grandfather, Austin Bird and my uncle, Morton Bird, both worked at Silloth on the ground.

Bob Bird .     Royal Air Force Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment

My late father, Bob Bird, was a photographer with the Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment, RAF Helensburgh. His wartime diary states that he flew to RAF Middleton St. George in Halifax bomber W7655, on Tuesday April 28 1942. He was accompanied by Mr Vincent Drake, head of air sea rescue trials at MAEE. Presumably this flight was something to do with air sea rescue equipment fitted to bombers, says Bob's son Robin, who is writing a book about the MAEE in WW2.

Emily Bird .     Womens Timber Corps   from London

My aunt Emy Bird was in the Land Army Forestry Corps, between 1941 and 1944, she left Kings Cross to commence her training in Bury St. Edmunds in East Anglia before being sent to Shadoxhurst in Ashford in Kent, where she was billeted out for the rest her time until she married, and became Mrs Sallows.

The one girl she clearly remembers was Doreen Richards from Killburn, London, as they stayed together and became great friends. She has many photos of this time as one of the girls in the group prior to the war had been a photographer.

My aunt is now 93 years old and quite sound of mind, and wonders if there are any other girls from that time and area out there. She remembers the young chap who drove the tractor at that time desperate to join up, but after an accident had badly damaged his back he had been left behind with the women.

Henry John "Dicky" Bird .     Royal Navy HMS Warspite   from London

My step-father Henry Bird, joined the Royal Navy in 1939 at sixteen years of age. He eventually served as a stoker. I remember him talking of Salerno and D-Day. Later he served out East and met former prisoners of the Japanese.

He was a good story teller, certainly the pride of being part of Britain's armed forces came across. Yet he did not glamorise anything. He included the tears, the prayers and the terror. He told it in the style of the rough working man that he was and polished it with the wisdom of having survived to grow older.

My step-father was a very tough man. Raised in the east-end, he did his share of boxing as well as war service. The fact that thirty years later he could still cry out in his sleep taught me much about people and war. Henry "Harry" Bird died in 1972.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
