AB. Harry Cowell HMS Highflyer (d.14th July 1945)

Harry Cowell is buried in Trincomalee War Cemetery, Sri Lanka.

Able Sea. Edward John Wright HMS Lanka

My father Ted" Wright served in the Royal Navy during WW2 from 20th of September 1943 until his medical discharge on 4th of May 1947. His training took place in various shore stations, including HMS Ganges, Pembroke, St Christopher, Drake, Hornet, Attack (ML303), Skirmisher (ML303) before setting sail for Gibraltar on 22nd of October 1944 aboard HMS Lanka (ML303). I have a long list of his ports of call from Algiers to Vizagapatam where the ship arrived on 19th of August 1945. He was based in Trincomolee, Ceylon on HMS High Flyer and HMS Bambara from the end of the war until his discharge.

I have many photos of boats and shipmates none of which has any form of identification.

He did have a little green notebook where he jotted down some names - presumably his shipmates. I list them below in case one of them (or their relatives) are seeking information.

  • Arthur A Hunter from near Glasgow
  • Jim Hearst? from Guildford
  • V Thorne from Swanscombe
  • K Hemsley from Chelmsford
  • C Dinmore
  • A W Douch from Colliers wood
  • L Fennell from Battersea
  • John Lawlor from Bradford (see note below)
  • W Tight

John Lawlor was obviously a bit of a poet and I have in my possession a poem written by him about the trip from Milford Haven to Gibraltar.

Janette Topliffe

Marine. Ronald Victor "Styx" Adamson HMS Highflyer

Ronald Adamson served with the Royal Marines and was in HMS Highflyer in 1945.

Able Sea. Thomas Eyres HMS Urley

My dad, Thomas Eyres, volunteered for the Royal Navy in 1943 at the age of 16. He did not speak much about his time at sea except that he was in the Indian Ocean and around Burma and Malaya. He was on HMS Lanka from 17th of August 1945 to 30th of Novemeber 1945 and later 21st of April 1946 ro 22nd of May 1946. I know that he was a qualified PFF from Feb 1944 but am unsure what this is. We only found this out when writing his eulogy after he died aged 86. He was trained on HMS Drake and served on HMS Urley, Nightjar, Valkyrie, Highflyer and Bambara as well as Lanka. I also know that he was in the concert party on some ships. I am now trying to find more information to pass on to his grandson.

Vivienne Ling

Coder Gilbert Carr HMS Scotia

My father, Gilbert Carr, volunteered for the Royal Navy in August 1944 days after his 18th birthday. He attended HMS Royal Arthur, Duke and Cabbala which were shorebased establishments, Cabbala being a signal school.

He then served on HMS Scotia, Mercury, aircraft carrier Trouncer, and Highflyer and was released to shore class A from Mercury in February 1947.

He told us once that he volunteered to man a rowing boat to rescue people from a ship which was on fire. Sadly, I never asked him more about it or got information about the burning ship. I am trying to trace more about this. He died some years ago, as did my mum so no-one left to ask.

If anyone can shed any light, or was on board any of the named vessels, I would love to hear their stories.
