Coder Gilbert Carr

Royal Navy HMS Scotia

from:Manchester, Lancashire

My father, Gilbert Carr, volunteered for the Royal Navy in August 1944 days after his 18th birthday. He attended HMS Royal Arthur, Duke and Cabbala which were shorebased establishments, Cabbala being a signal school.

He then served on HMS Scotia, Mercury, aircraft carrier Trouncer, and Highflyer and was released to shore class A from Mercury in February 1947.

He told us once that he volunteered to man a rowing boat to rescue people from a ship which was on fire. Sadly, I never asked him more about it or got information about the burning ship. I am trying to trace more about this. He died some years ago, as did my mum so no-one left to ask.

If anyone can shed any light, or was on board any of the named vessels, I would love to hear their stories.
