These include information on officers, regimental histories, letters, diary entries, personal accounts and information about actions during the Second World War.

Mar. Edward Albert Heeley HMS Byrsa (d.6th Dec 1944)

Edward Heeley was my third cousin, once removed. He was born on 15th of March 1924 in Newcastle upon Tyne to Edward Albert Heeley and Martha Beveridge Ogden. He was one of 8 children, and the family lived at 20 Shottery Grove, Tyseley, Birmingham.

He died at the 65th British General Hospital in Naples of injuries sustained in a road accident, and was buried in the Naples War Cemetery, Naples, Italy.

Brian Southwell

Tel. Geoffrey Richard "Knocker" White HMS Glasgow

My father, Geoffrey White, joined the Royal Navy in May 1939 as a sixteen year old Boy Second Class. His first sea going appointment was as an Ordinary Telegraphist on HMS Glasgow on 30th of October 1940. Serving on her in the Mediterranean (where she was torpedoed at Souda Bay) and on convoy escort duties in the Indian Ocean. He left her at New York in June 1942 when the Glasgow underwent major repairs.

He was subsequently involved in Operation Torch and its aftermath with bases at HMS Hannibal, HMS Byrsa, HMS Elissa (Augusta) until 19th of November 1944 when he returned to a UK based shore appointment at HMS Mercury as a Leading Telegraphist. He remained in the Royal Navy until retirement as a Chief Radio Supervisor on 16th of May 1968.

Richard White

AB. Laurance Henry Gumbley HMS Byrsa

My father Laurance Gumbley served on HMS Byrsa from 30th of July 1944 to 25th of Oct 1945. He also served on HMS Palomares between 27th of May 1943 to 25 Jul 1944. I would love any information about him and the crew and would like to be able to replace any medals that are now lost.

Clive Gumbley

Stkr PO. James Alfred Sams MID HMS Byrsa

My father, James Sam was mentioned in dispatches in the King's Birthday Honours List in 1945. I have been researching but this is the only document I can find. Any information to fill in the blanks would be good. His rank was Stoker PO, and his service record before serving on HMS Byrsa is very sketchy. When he demobbed he moved back to Portsmouth and worked as a civil servant in the dockyard. He died in 1972 aged 60.

Dave De La Haye

Stkr. Frank Morrissy HMS Byrsa

Frank Morrissy was a stoker and we have found a old letter that he sent to his family when he was at HMS Byrsa in Naples, Italy in the 1940s. We are not sure of the dates. We have no idea where Frank went and no idea what ships served on, but are trying to find as much information as possible.

Bill Clews

Wilfred Haynes HMS Byrsa

I am researching my father, Wilfred Haynes. Dad was probably better known as Bill. Prior to joining up he was a P&TO in Redditch, Worcestershire. Dad was born in 1920 in Levenshume, Manchester. He never spoke about the war in any form and now it's too late to ask him as Dad passed away. In the photograph Bill is 1 row from the back, 2nd signalman on the left.

His service included postings at: HMS Byrsa (Naples) and HMS Euroclydon (Malta) from 1942. After the war he married and moved to Bridge Farm Beoley, one of several residences. I'd be very grateful for any information.

Simon Haynes
