Pte. George W. Manzi. British Army, East Yorkshire Regiment. (d.25th September 1944)

There is not a lot that we know about our uncle George Manzi, as he died when he was 19 during World War Two. However, we do know that he died in operation Market Garden, Arnhem, Holland on 25th of September 1944. We found his grave in a small cemetery in Arnhem. I was the first person to visit him since he was buried over 70 years ago.

Terr McGinley

Pte. C. Ash. British Army, South Staffordshire Regiment. (d.25 September 1944)

Private Ash's grave is in Schoonhoven The Netherlands. He is the only British soldier buried in Schoonhoven. He probably died during operation Market Garden and his body was taken by the river to Schoonhoven 80 km from Arnhem.

Pte. Thomas Dacey. British Army, 1st Battalion Parachute Regiment. (d.25th September 1944)

Thomas Dacey served with the 1st Battalion, Parachute Regiment.

Nicola Meason

Tpr. David John Howells. British Army, 49th Recce Regiment Reconnaissance Corps . (d.25th September 1944)

My uncle, David Howells, known as Jack, served in 49th Recce Regt throughout the war. He landed with the regiment in Normandy and died on the Albert Canal on the 25th of September 1944 aged 25. I am tracing his war service as much as I can.

David Howells

John Burge was a member of the Metropolitan Police but volunteered to join the Glider Pilot Regiment AAC and train as a Glider Pilot. He was killed in action aged 25 on 25th of September 1944 age 25 years and is remembered on the Groesbeek Memorial in The Netherlands.

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
