Stories from 25th October 1944

Flt.Sgt. Harold Chambers. Royal Air Force, 158 Squadron.

Harold Chambers was my father. He very rarely talked about his experiences and we have only a few things that we know. He was with 158 Sqaudron at Lissett. He was the Flight Sgt on a Halifax 111 bomber, MZ734 NP-U. They took off from Lissett at 12:42 hours on 25th October 1944, the target being Essen, unfortunately they were shot down and the crew were taken prisoners. The crew consisted of
  • Flt Lt WD Harrison pilot
  • Fl Officer H Lanzetter
  • F1 Officer RJ Armstrong
  • Sgt H Chambers
  • Sgt TW Rutland
  • Sgt GR Johnson
  • Sgt WT Williams
Sgt Williams died in captivity on the 13th of April 1945, he was only 19 years old. Dad arrived back in England March 1945, which was earlier that other POW's. Rhis information was given to me by Rodger Stanton from the WW2 Escape Lines Memorial Society. Dad told us that he had escaped during the long march but this does not seem to fit with when others say the camp was moved. If anyone can advise on this I would be most grateful

L/Cpl. Kenneth John Farmer. British Army, 7th Btn. The Black Watch. (d.25th Oct 1944)

This was my Uncle Ken. I do not have a lot of information on him as my family fragmented when my parents divorced when I was 9. I was always in awe of my hero uncle who died at the age of 19 in a place called Halschewater in the Netherlands on 25/10/1944. He was one of only two 7th batallion members recorded killed that day. The other was CPL Harold Dawson 2885672 who was 27. I never really got any details from my mother about his short military career other than he was a "Leading sniper of eight" whatever that meant. He is buried in Eindhoven (Woensel) General Cemetery grave # 179 in plot KK he is there with a lot of aircrew that had died during the many operations from 1940 onwards. His comrade in arms Cpl Dawson was returned to Aberdeen and laid to rest by his family. I have two children of my own now and I tell them often of their great uncle who went to war and never came home. I look at my son who is now the same age as Ken Farmer was when he served and I shudder to think of what my Grandparents and Mother had to deal with when they heard their first born had died. I will always be proud to carry his name and I will ensure he is never fogotten by my clan. Rest in Peace Ken, you saved us all!

A/Sbdr Ram Sarup Singh. VC. British Indian Army, 1st Punjab Regiment. (d.25th Oct 1944)

Ram Sarup Singh was 25 years old, and an Acting Subadar in the 2nd Battlion, 1st Punjab Regiment when he was awarded the VC.

On 25 October 1944 at Kennedy Peak in the Tiddim area, Burma, two platoons were ordered to attack a strong Japanese position. The platoon commanded by Subadar Singh attained its objective and although Singh was wounded in both legs he insisted on carrying on. Later, the enemy's counter-attack was halted by Subadar Singh's dashing counter-charge in which he killed four of the enemy himself. He was again wounded, but continued to lead his men, killing two more of the enemy, until he was mortally wounded."

Pte. Albert Osuowa Azuonye. African Pioneer Corps (West Africa), Royal West African Frontier Force. (d.25th October 1944)

Private Azuonye is buried in the Rabat European Cemetery in Morocco.

Pte. Alexander George MacKenzie. Canadian Army, North Shore N.B. Reg.. (d.25th Oct 1944 )

I did not have the pleasure of knowing my uncle Sandy MacKenzie. He died before I was born. All his family are gone now. I was able to get the information from Ottawa about his army history which I am presenting to the legion in Tatamagouche, NS where he has his name on the war monument . He was only 23 when he died, not even in Belgium for a year.

I had the pleasure of visiting his grave last year at Adegem Canadian War Cemetery in Belgium. So many young men lost their lives.

Pte Alexander George "Sandy" MacKenzie. Canadian Army, North Shore N.B. Regiment. (d.25th Oct 1944 )

Alexander MacKenzie served with North Shore N.B. Regiment.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
