Wanted: Digital copies of Group photographs, Scrapbooks, Autograph books, photo albums, newspaper clippings, letters, postcards and ephemera relating to WW2. We would like to obtain digital copies of any documents or photographs relating to WW2 you may have at home.

If you have any unwanted photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them. The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes. Capt. George Henry Borrow. MC. British Army, Royal Sussex Regiment. (d.24th March 1944)

George Borrow was the son of Edward and Alys Mable Constance Borrow, of Diss, Norfolk, England. He served as A.D.C. to Major General Orde Charles Wingate with the Chindits. He was killed in an aircrash, along with 8 others including British General Orde Charles Wingate, in India on 24th of March 1944. He was buried with the others in a mass grave in Section 12, Coll. grave 288 in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC.

The son of Colonel George Wingate C.I.E. and Mary Ethel Stanley Wingate (nee Orde Browne), Orde Charles Wingate was husband of Lorna E. M. Wingate (nee Moncrieff Paterson), of Edinburgh, Scotland. He commanded a special force known as the "Chindits". Awarded the Lawrence of Arabia Memorial Medal by the Royal Central Asian Society, 1943.

While on an airplane flight, Wingate's Boeing B25 Mitchell plane crashed into the Burmese jungle. He and all his party were killed in the crash on 24 March 1944 and are buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, DC.

My late uncle, Sgt W/Op/Air Morgan died on 24th March 1944.

Lancaster LL625 C (Charlie) crashed in Germany on 24th/25th March 1944. This was the last major Berlin raid. There was one survivor: F/Sgt R.B. McAlister. The full crew were:
  • F/Sgt. R.B. McAlister, RCAF, mid-upper gunner
  • F/O J.R. Laing, RAFVR, pilot
  • Sgt. A. Vickers, RAFVR, navigator
  • F/Sgt J. Knights, RAFVR, bomb aimer
  • F/Sgt. G.E. Scott, RAFVR, wop/airgunner
  • Sgt. C.A. Salt, RAFVR, rear gunner
  • Sgt. P.C.K. Bennett, RAFVR, flight engineer

    All the crew who died were buried in Berlin 1939-45 War Cemetery.

    I am researching information pertaining to a raid on Berlin on 24th/25th March 1944. My grandfather, RAFVR Flt Sgt Jo Wadsworth, was lost on this mission. He was in Lancaster Squadron 103.

    WOII. George Kitchener Jarvis. Royal Canadian Air Force, 407 Squadron. (d.24th Mar 1944)

    George Jarvis, flew as a Pilot with 407 Squadron. His aircraft did not return from a coastal patrol over the North Sea. He and the other crew members were presumed dead on 24th of March1944. George was the dearly loved foster son of Ethel Clarke and foster brother of Muriel and Gordon Clarke. His memory is sustained by their children and grand children.

    Samuel Mitchell was my Great-Grandfather. He died the very day my Grandmother was born. He is buried in The Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery. I would love to find out more about him.

    The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

    The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
