Pte. Samuel Slavin. British Army, 4th Btn Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. (d.14th Oct 1944)

In January 2010 a group of friends from Liverpool visited Auschwitz in Poland. Whilst there we also visited the Main Cemetry in Krakow and came upon the grave of Samuel Slavin. Jis relatives may like to know that we said a prayer and placed a poppy on the grave. Although covered in over a foot of snow, it was clear to see the site is being well maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

I do not know if Samuel is related but as an ex soldier myself I can appreciate the sacrifice made by our Servicemen and women.

Tom Slavin

Sgt. Cecil "Jack" Wilkinson. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 153 Sqdn.. (d.14th October 1944)

Sgt Cecil Wilkinson was killed on 14th October 1944 during a raid on Duisburg. His aircraft was JB297. He is buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery Grave 16.C.9.

Sgt. Robert Hamilton. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 115 Squadron. (d.14th Oct 1944)

Robert Hamilton was the son of Alex Hamilton, known as Sanny and his wife Mary. Along with their six children, two boys and four girls, they lived in the small north Ayrshire town of Beith, Scotland. On the 14th October 1944 at approximately 23 years of age, Robert Hamilton was killed. My family lived in the flat above theirs. I was just a toddler at the time, but I do remember seeing Mary, clutching a piece of paper and coming to share the tragic news with my Mum. She was completely heartbroken at the loss of her son. Robert is interred at Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.

If any readers knew Robert during his time in military service and are willing to share those memories, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thomas Anderson

Fus. Robert Tonge. British Army, 11th Btn. Lancashire Fusiliers. (d.14th Oct 1944)

Robert Tonge was my great grandfather's brother. He was from Manchester and served in the Lancashire Fusiliers 11th Battalion. We know very little else of his story apart from what is shown on his war records. Robert died at war on October 14th 1944 aged 29 years. He is buried in Faenza war cemetery in Italy. We would love to hear any shared memories that have made their way down the line or see any photographs.

My great aunt from Church Stretton lost her only child, Norman Molyneux over Budapest, he was shot down laying mines in the River Danube.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did you or your relatives live through the Second World War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial? Were you or your relative evacuated? Did an air raid affect your area?

If so please let us know.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
