Stories from 11th June 1944

Tpr. James John Floyd. Canadian Army, Company B First Hussars.

My father James Floyd was captured at a battle in Le Mensil Pantry after the Normandy invasion I believe on 11th June 1944. He was a tank driver with the First Hussars Company B. He spent a year in stalag 357 until liberation. He gave some statement at the trial of Kurt Meyer therefore I believe he must have been captured by the 12th SS. I would like any information anyone has. He never talked a lot about the war and i know most of his company was captured or killed.

Paul Floyd

Leading Seaman Jesse Bentley. Navy, HMS Halstead. (d.11th June 1944)

Leading Seaman Jesse Bentley was killed on the 11th June 1944 on board HMS Halstead. He was aged 32 and lived with his wife and child at Rowlands Castle, Hampshire.

George Yalden

Able Seaman. Harry Heslop. Royal Navy, HMS Halstead.

One of my relatives Able Seaman Harry Heslop from Thornaby on Tees was killed on the 11th June 1944, while serving on HMS Halstead.

Raymond Todd

Frederick Henry George "Micky" Scammells. Royal Navy, HMS Halstead. (d.11th Jun 1944)

I am trying to trace, what happened to my uncle in World War Two. His name was Micky Scammels and his name is on the memorial post in Selsy, West Sussex. Just south of Chichester, West Sussex. He enlisted into the Royal Navy, we think in 1938,and I believe he was on a submarine when it went down, my grandmother was informed that he was missing in action. I know that is where he lived at the time he went missing, and did not come home. Please can you tell me where I can find out more about him. He had two children at the time, his widows name was Betty. Thank you so much.

Update:

I have checked the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site, which lists only one man of the name

Frederick Henry George Scammells Able Seaman official number P/SSX 30905

killed in action 11.6.1944 HMS Halstead

24 years old Husband of Betty, of Selsey, Sussex

Name engraved on Portsmouth Naval War Memorial

I would think that this would be your uncle. The official number with the prefix P/SSX shows that he would have been based at Portsmouth and had joined on a 'short service' engagement (seven years with a further five in the reserve).

I trust this will help

David

Update:

My father, F.H.G.Scammells (Micky) died on 11th June 1944 aboard HMS Halstead along with Lesley Cobby, Alfred Cooper, Harry Heslop and others. Any information on his friends, pictures etc will be welcome. I was only 2 years old at the time.

P/O. Douglas Thomas George Fairbairn. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 100 Squadron. (d.11th Jun 1944)

I am the cousin of Doug Fairbairn. I have visited his grave in Serazereux Communal Cemetery, near Chartres, France. Here are the details I know:

On the night of the 10th June a Lancaster Mk III bomber (ND.594 ‘P’) flown by Pilot Officer Fairbairn with a crew of 8. The aircraft took off from Grimsby at 22.55 in good weather with 19 other Lancasters from 100 sqdn. The crews had been placed on standby for the mission early in the day. Orders identifying the target had not been received until 16.00.

Their mission was to bomb the railway near Archeres. To the west of Archeres towards Paris was a marshalling yard and nearby were twin junction switches on the rail network. The operations log for 100 sqdn records the junction was “already a much bombed tactical objective but still passing German military traffic to the Western front”. Indeed the aircraft had been had navigated there four days earlier with P/O Fairbairn and bombed the target on the night of the 6/7th June landing back at Grimsby at 03.05

As the aircraft crossed southern England the aircraft encountered low cloud that continued over the Channel and then the weather cleared. 17 planes reached Archeres and dropped 68 tons of high explosive. I aircraft arrived too late over the target and was forced to jettison its bomb load into the sea on the return.

432 aircraft from Bomber Command - 323 Lancasters, 90 Halifaxes, 19 Mosquitos - attacked railway targets at Achères, Dreux, Orléans and Versailles that night. All targets were believed to have been hit but few further details are available. 15 Lancasters and 3 Halifaxes were lost 2 of those Lancasters were from 100 Sqdn and failed to return to Grimsby.

It was later discovered that the aircraft had crashed at Serazereux 20 kilometres north-north-west of Chartres and about 15 kilometres south-south-east of Dreux. All 8 crew died. They were buried in a communal grave in Serazereuz Cemetery and are the only service personnel in the cemetery. The cemetery is east of the village on the road to the neighbouring village of Ormoy. I have a photograph of the grave.

My great uncle Staff Sgt. John S. Lewis served in the 2nd Armored Division, 41st Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion (HQ). I would like to find out more information on their missions June 7th to June 11, 1944. He was killed in action on June 11, 1944. His sister, my grandmother, is now 90 and she has never known what happened to her little brother.

Pte. Albert Simpson. British Army, Seaforth Highlanders. (d.11th Jun 1944)

My Father Roy always wanted to see his brother Albert's grave. He died before he got the chance so I will be going in his place. He always thought that Albert had died on the beaches, but he actually died of his wounds in a makeshift hospital on 11th June 1944. Albert Simpson served with the Seaforth Highlanders.

Angela Cole

Mjr. Frederick Harvey Honeyman. MC. British Army , 6th Btn. Green Howards. (d.11th Jun 1944)

Major Frederick Honeyman was awarded the Military Cross for his gallantry when the Green Howard's landed in Normandy on the 6th of June 1944. He was commanding A Company of the 6th Battalion at La Riviere when he earned the Military Cross. He led an attack on an enemy position guarded by seven pillboxes and defended by soldiers by throwing grenades over a six-foot wall. Although he was hit in the arm and leg by splinters, his citation records how he ‘restored the impetus of the attack and took the position, killing or capturing all the enemy. But five days later he was killed as he tried to rescue some of the wounded men from his company who were trapped in a wood. Under severe fire he went alone towards another British position to try and enlist help, but was shot.

A letter sent to Major Honeyman’s mother from his batman, Tom Harris, is in the Green Howard's Museum collection in Richmond. Harris wrote: “He was not only my company commander, but also my best friend and he treated me more like his brother. ...at the most unfortunate moment he sent me back out of the way and considered my safety before his”.

Sarah Shepherd

W/O. William Harvey. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 78 Squadron. (d.11th June 1944)

My late father's brother, Willie Harvey, is buried in Stonefall Cemetery, Harrogate and I was told he was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident. He was a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner. I would love to hear from anyone who served with or knew him.

Debra Hughes

Writer. Rowland William "Ron" Berkeley. Royal Navy, H.M.S. Halstead. (d.11th June 1944)

My uncle Ron Berkeley was a serving ship's writer on HMS Halstead in the 2nd World War. I have little information about him and his job on the ship and would love to hear any story or information about him. I know he was killed on the ship on the fateful night of 11th June 1944 and would be so grateful to know more about the role of the ship that night.

How brave those people were, and so selfless. I have no photos of my uncle Ron now, though I remember as a boy his picture hanging in a place of honour in our home.

Mick Duerden

Pte. Arthur Henry Morley. British Army, 2nd Btn. Essex Rgt.. (d.11th June 1944)

My great uncle, Pte. Arthur Henry Morley, was born around 1919 and died on 11th June 1944 during the landings after D-day. He is commemorated on the Bayeux Memorial, XIV.D.6.

Update

If your great uncle was killed with the 2nd Essex on 11th June 1944 he was certainly a casualty of the first big battle of his battalion in the Normandy campaign. This bitter fight was near the villages of Verrieres and Lingevres and there were 15 memebrs of his battalion killed in action on that fateful day and quite a number of wounded. They even renamed the local wood "Essex Wood" in honour of the regiment. There was a memorial unveiled for that particular action on 7th June 2004 in the presence of several veterans of the Essex Regiment. (Francis Huijbrechts)

Charlotte

F/Lt. George Mains. Royal Air Force, 229 Sqdn.. (d.11th June 1944)

George Mains from Glasgow, Scotland was listed missing presumed dead in the English Channel. He was a Spitfire pilot in the City Edinburgh Squadron. Any information would be appreciated.

Denis Williams

Pte. James Bert Sheppard. British Army, 1st Btn. South Staffordshire Regiment. (d.11th June 1944)

My uncle Bert Sheppard, was my Mum's older brother and, from what little mum has told me, he was her favourite brother. She used to get quite emotional when talking about him, being as he was so young when he went to war and subsequently died, he was actually listed as missing in action. I do have a grave site number, but I have no photos of him. Mum did have a cut out that was on a wooden stand which she had promised this to me when she passed, but dad didn't handle mum's death very well and burnt this photo. I was absolutely devastated. I would love to know whether Burt received any medals or if his name is on anything. So any assistance or information, big or small, would be greatly appreciated.

P/O. Peter M. Shaw. Royal Air Force, 166 Squadron. (d.11th June 1944)

Peter Shaw flew a Lancaster bomber, taking off from Kirmington, Lincs on 10th of June 1944 at 22.31hrs. The mission was to bomb the railway at Acheres, north of Paris. The plane crashed at Mareil-le-Guyon and all seven members of the crew were lost. I recently received information from the village where the graves are well looked after..

Peter's father, my grandfather, served with the RFC during the First World War and finished as a squadron commander. I'm wondering if he was in the same squadron? He served as a colonel in the army during WW11. I'd be grateful for any information.

Jennifer M Bell

Lt. Hugh James Handford. Royal Navy, HMS Halsted. (d.11th Jun 1944)

Lt Hugh Handford was my father. He was appointed to HMS Halsted as Second Lt. on 11th of March 1944. Halsted was torpedoed by E Boats on the 11th of June 1944. He and many others of the crew were blown overboard and killed. He was washed ashore in Normandy and is buried at Bayeux War Cemetery.
