263581 Sgt. Robert Read DCM. British Army 25th (Welsh Horse) Btn. Royal Welsh Fusiliers from:Blaengwyfe, Glamorganshire (d.31st Oct 1917) Robert Read, 25th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers My great-uncle, Robert Read, enlisted along with three of his brothers in 1915. They were a family of butchers owning a business in Blaengwynfe, Glamorganshire. During his service, Robert was promoted to the rank of sergeant, and then was awarded the DCM for going to save a wounded officer whilst under fire although he himself had been shot in the knee and the side of his body. He was later redeployed after recovering from his injuries, but was killed in action during the third, successful, attempt at taking Beersheba in what was then Egypt and is now Israel.
