James Percival Turner MM.

British Army 12th Btn. Northumberland Fusiliers

My uncle James Percival Turner was in 12th, Northumberland fusiliers and mentioned on P.185 of "The First Day on the Somme" book by Martin Middlebrook. He was awarded the Military medal and later the bar. He was a stretcher bearer.

Additional Information:

I also have an uncle James Percival Turner who won MM and Bar in WW1. He was from Long Eaton, Notts (or Derby). I don't know the regiment but it could be Northumberland Fusiliers. He was medical officer's batman as well as medical orderly. He was born in 1896. I'm the son of his youngest sister Marjorie.

Michael

Thank you very much for your message. I do not have Marjorie in the list of siblings John, Sarah, Frederick, Hilda and Cyril. However, it sounds the same James Percival, though I have the birth date of 1895, parents John and Mary. James Percival is mentioned in "The first day on the Somme", by Martin Middlebrook, page nos. 185 and 344. I have also been searching for details of my father's WW1 record. His name John Thomas Allen born 1899,working life at Magnet Garage, Tamworth Road, Long Eaton. He served in France trenches but don't know where. Do you by chance have any information? Again, very many thanks.

Judith

Fascinating. Sorry I can't help with your father's record. I presume you are connected to Uncle Perce on Auntie Ada's side of the family. I remember Uncles Jack, Fred and Sid (Cyril) and Auntie Hilda (who came to our wedding in 1959). Saran and another brother Len died before my time. I believe Perce received the MM twice for climbing out of the trench and going into no-man's-land to care for injured soldiers. I'd love to see the citations.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did your relative live through the Great War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial?

If so please let us know.

Do you know the location of a Great War "Roll of Honour?"

We are very keen to track down these often forgotten documents and obtain photographs and transcriptions of the names recorded so that they will be available for all to remember.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Great War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.
