Harold Greenberg

South African Army Transvaal Scottish Regiment

My father, Harold Greenberg was in the Transvaal Scottish and fought in North Africa. He passed away when I was 17 years old and I remember him telling me the odd war story.

One was of how he was captured by Germans and escaped. He used to exaggerate somewhat so I never took him seriously. However, after reading some stories on your web site, I see some similarities. He was captured in North Africa by Germans (or maybe Italians) and while being held there, he and a couple of other soldiers managed to escape. They spent a couple of weeks in the desert while making their way to a port. There he boarded an Allied ship and was ultimately taken back to South Africa. I remember him telling me that he was just 90lbs when doctors started treating him.

He had two items that I should have held onto when he died. One was an old brown Transvaal Scottish book which was about 5" thick. It had many photos and I think it had names of people who served and died, and maybe names of people captured. The other was a round hard candy tin that had bullets, Nazi uniform badges and other such things. When I asked him where he got this, he said he said from a dead Nazi.
