Samuel Livermore
Royal Navy H.M.S. Mauritius
from:Newcastle Upon Tyne
Sam Livermore was my late uncle, he died in 2007
During WW2 he had served in the Royal Navy, and had seen action in both the Mediterranean and Atlantic.
I believe that he may have been a Stewards in the O.M. but had a Battle Station manning AA guns.
I can only remember the name of one ship that he served on, and that ship was Mauritius. It was on that ship that he received a dunking on crossing the equator.
I still have in my possession both the certificate of crossing signed by ( of course ) Neptune, and some photos of the ceremony which was held in a makeshift pool made from canvas and poles.
Uncle Sam had many a tale to tell.... of aircraft attacks upon the ships and so on, but most stories were of ordinary men who became the best of pals and shipmates, and some of those friendships lasted beyond the war.
Life was hard below decks.
To anyone who reads this, I am so proud of all of my uncles who served, and sadly some who died, in giving me the life and the experiences that I have enjoyed.
Most have now passed.
God bless them all
