260564 L/Cpl. John Arthur Hacker British Army 7th Btn. Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards) from:Beeston, Nottinghamshire (d.16th Jun 1944) John Hacker landed at Gold Beach on D-Day at approx. 0800. He came under fire as his Battalion travelled through Crepon and Creuilly, up to Loucelles. The Battalion remained in the area of St. Leger for a number of days, with enemy sightings often reported in the area south of Bronay. A Canadian platoon (from the Winnipeg Rifles, with whom they had established a joint post) counter-attacked the enemy on the railway embankment at Bronay but came under heavy fire. Repeated attempts were made to push forward past the embankment, but they were often pinned down and pushed back by enemy machine-guns. On the 16th of June, the battalion moved out towards Les Oreilles, traveling through La Senaudiere. There, they came under heavy machine-gun and mortar fire, and John was killed, along with two Majors.
