Pte. Harry Jones

British Army 1st Btn. B Coy. Royal Norfolk Regiment

>Harry Jones enlisted in the Royal Artillery 12th of September 1940 aged 20, before transferring to the 1st Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment 18th of November 1943.

He landed at Queen Red sector, left flank of Sword beach, Normandy, France at about 10.30 a.m. on 6th of June 1944 (D Day), behind the Commandos, as a member of B company, 1st Battalion, which was in turn part of 185th Infantry Brigade in the 3rd Infantry Division. He was in the same platoon as Corporal Sydney Bates, who won the Victoria Cross (posthumously) 6th of August 1944 for charging at the attacking 10th SS Panzer Division troops and forcing them to withdraw.

Harry was wounded in his left leg by shrapnel from a mortar shell while advancing across open territory at the battle of Kervenheim, Germany on 1st of March 1945 and evacuated to England three days later, before finally being discharged by the Army 27th of March 1946.
