259884 Sgt. John Arthur Treby Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 1667 Heavy Conversion Unit from:Fordham Essex (d.1st Jun 1944) John Treby was the son of John Frederick Treby and Ingeborg Berg. They lived at Homescroft, Hemps Green Fordham. John was killed on a night cross country exercise on board Halifax LL414 aircraft, which was from the 1667 Heavy Conversion Unit. The squadron was based at RAF Sandtoft, in Lincolnshire. The plane failed to return and it is thought to have crashed in the early hours of 1st of June 1944 because of bad weather and engine failure. The plane went down in the Glen Isla area in Scotland. Onboard the aircraft were eight airmen including John, one other RAF serviceman and six Canadian airmen. There were no survivors. Most of the crew are buried at Montrose Sleepyhillock Cemetery in Angus Scotland.
