Pte. Charles Edward Sibley
British Army Sherwood Foresters
from:19 City Road, Derby
My Father, Charles Sibley, served with the Sherwood Foresters in WW2. He was captured in North Africa and transported to Italy in April/May 1942. He escaped (or walked out) from the camp with the help of an Italian family. He became very ill and was looked after and brought back to reasonable health then was taken to a rail station which was heavily guarded by German soldiers, but as he had black hair and an olive complexion had managed to board a train which took him closer to the Swiss boarder. Arriving there he was captured by the guards, fortunately they were Swiss, but Dad was very worried for a time as their helmets were similar to the German helmets.
After several months he was taken through the South of France and into Spain where he boarded a ship back to the UK. I still have the rail tickets for his journey to Northern Italy.
